After spending some quiet time from the tablet market, Kata is now aiming to make a bold statement with the T5. It is a 7.85 Inch tablet that features a bit of formality with its style and without the jumbo price tag.

Unboxing / Accessories

We've already grown accustomed to Kata's trademark packaging. The T5 maintains a clean and simple white box design with the T5 and the all to familiar fish logo. Inside, you'll find the T5 along with its accessories: a standard 1A wall charger, a micro USB cable, and the manual and warranty clause.

A headset would've been nice to be part of the package and could be considered by some as an essential accessory especially for devices that has a headphone socket.

Build Quality / Design

Pretty solid build!
Pretty solid build!

It has a metallic back panel that showcases the Kata Logos in the middle and bottom of the panel. It has glass in front, but there's no mention of glass protection. But, this is still one of the better built tablets for the price.

At first glance, the T5 showcases a simple but elegant exterior. The feel and and vibe of this tablet is nothing short of premium for the price.

On the left hand side, there is a memory card slot that is exposed. The attempt on "ease of access" may also prove a problem as on occasion I accidentally removed the memory card. An 8 MP camera can be found at the top corner.

It isn't just that handy as it is a big tablet. But, gladly, it generally feels good in the hands.

Display Quality

Decent screen performance
Decent screen performance

The T5 features a 7.85 Inch 1024 x 768 resolution at 163 ppi. Colors are a not that vivid but that is the only thing I would complain about the display. It's sharpness is acceptable and overall would do the job with your Netflix videos.

For a tablet that is being showcased primarily on the document and office use, the display definitely gives you your money's worth.

It does have a 5 multi-touch which is acceptable but having more could be useful given the size of the tablet.

Audio Quality

The T5's speakers work well in indoor and closed spaces. The sound quality is nice and clean even on high volumes.

It is not as quirks though as some bass heavy sounds tend to distort on the higher volume ranges which I think could be acceptable to those who just appreciate some music to accompany them during commute.

It could also be a decent drivers for your favorite earphones.

Battery Life

PCMark results

The T5's has 3,500 mAh of battery which isn't that large for an almost 8 inch tablet. The 4 hours 6 mins, score from PC Mark is a bit low though. But with casual use, some videos here and there, the Kata T5 last approximate around 5 to 6 hours.

Charging time from 0 to 100 percent is at 2.5 hours.

Camera

Camera interface

The Kata T5 comes with an 8 MP camera. It has panoramic, beauty shot, and HDR which are staples for cameras within this price range.

The camera performs adequately and can easily be used to take some good images especially in well lit scenes. It focus isn't that great and it does in lack detailing and some richness expected from tablet cameras.

But, I do not think anyone would complain much at this price. It has no flash though.

Lowlight

In front, Kata advertised that it has a 5 MP selfie camera sensor, but it doesn't feel like one. Our shots are either grainy, underexposed, and violetish. Use in lowlight conditions is far from acceptable. HDR mode can partially correct exposure and colors.

But, in general, it is even less impressive than the main camera and should be improved.

It can record up to 1920 x 1080 resolution videos using the main camera, but do not expect great performance.

Antutu result

This tablet is powered by a 1.3 GHz MT8163B quad core processor with Mali 400 and 1 GB of RAM. This is a downgrade compared with the chipset of Kata T Mini 4. Given that, the tablet performs well enough for all around tasks.
Geekbench score
Geekbench score

It scored well from Antutu and geekbench which are actually better than expected. It can run some graphic heavy games without and distinctive lags or pixelation.

The T5 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Fingers crossed that it gets updated for performance benefits. this device maintains the no app drawer that Kata users have grown accustomed to.

What I like from the get go is the apps that came in with the tablet - Netflix, evernote, WPS, Mega VPN, and more. It gives you a bit of assurance that you have some essential apps once you taken the T5 out of the box.

Pros - Build quality and design is amazing, great battery life, useful multimedia apps
Cons - Cameras could be improve, android version could be updated.

Verdict

The Kata T5 is a good all around tablet with a lot of great entertainment centric start-up apps and an elegant feel to boot. Of course, it is not gonna be the gaming tablet of choice given the price, but it does the job for anyone looking for a daily companion tablet.

The camera is not as great as expected and hopefully can be improved by software updates.
