Build / Design

LG used tougher materials compared w/ Sony
LG used tougher materials compared w/ Sony

The LG G6 sports a much improved build and design coming from the LG G5. The company ditched the modular concept for the better and simpler metal clad unibody construction. As a result, the LG G6 was crafted like a tankIt has military grade rating, Gorilla Glass 5 protection, IP68 water and dust resistance, and military grade rating.

On the other hand, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a very well made device as well. It's made out of glass and metal and plastic. It also has Gorilla Glass 5 protection and IP68 water and dust resistance.

Compared w/ the Xperia, LG's offering feels and looks like the tougher device. The materials LG used to craft the G6 is also noticeably tougher.

In addition, the LG G6 sports a more modern and sleeker look compared w/ Sony Xperia XZ Premium. In particular, LG's offering even has a smaller body despite having a bigger 5.7 inch display compared w/ the 5.5 inch screen of Xperia XZ Premium.

As a result, the ergonomics of G6 is better.

Display Quality

18:9 QHD+ screen or 16:9 w/ 4K resolution display?
18:9 QHD+ screen or 16:9 w/ 4K resolution display?

LG G6 sports a large 5.7 inch screen w/ QHD+ resolution of 2880 x 1440 resolution at 565 ppi. It has HDR10 and Dolby Vision compliance to ensure that your viewing experience is great. As a result. it is sharp in details and has great punchy colors. It also offers wider viewing experience due to its 18:9 or 2:1 screen aspect ratio. It also has great max brightness level for outdoor use.

Viewing contents on bigger and wider screen is amazing on LG's G6!

Despite being smaller, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium w/ 5.5 inch screen has the sharpest display on any smartphone today. In particular, it has the beastly 4K HDR Triluminos screen with 3840 x 2160 pixels at 807 pixels per inch.

The Xperia XZ Premium has insane sharpness for a phone!

Moreover, this handset is also HDR10 compliant. it has very rich colors w/ excellent contrast and saturation. It arguably has the best screen quality on a phone yet. It's 4K resolution would also be great for viewing VR contents in high resolution.

On this part, it's a very tough call. I'm slightly favoring Sony due to its screen quality. But, I won't blame you if you find LG's 18:9 HDR10 + Dolby Vision wide screen to be too appealing.

Audio Quality

The single speaker of LG G6 is louder than the stereo speakers of Xperia XZ Premium. But, even if it is weaker in sound, we find Sony's speaker audio quality to be clearer sounding and more musical than G6.

For headphones, the LG G6 w/ Quad DAC setup is simply the better Hi-Res mobile audio player. It simply has better balance, details, and bass reproduction than the Xperia. Moreover, it has no audible distortion at all.

Both has two microphones that can record clear audio. We are slightly favoring LG on this one for its recordings w/ less noise.

Battery Life

The LG G6 comes w/ a 3,300 mAh of battery. It has a screen on time of around 5 hours on a single charge. On the other hand, the Sony Xperia XZ w/ smaller 3,230 mAh lasted for a little longer w/ over 6 hours of screen on time. For charging, both has speedy 1.5 hours of charging time from 0 to 100 percent if you'll use a Quick Charge 3.0 charger.

Camera

Single vs dual cameras

At the back, the LG G6 highlights a 13 MP f/1.8 w/ OIS + 13 MP f/2.4 wide angle dual camera setup. It has lots of useful mode that includes the super wide angle mode, auto HDR, panorama, 360 panorama, food, popout, snap, square, and manual camera mode.

The manual camera mode is even available for both normal and wide angle mode. It has  1 / 1400 and up to 32 seconds shutter. Moreover, it has an option that allows you to shoot in RAW.

On the other hand, the XPeria XZ Premium has the new 19 MP f/2.0 IMX400 Motion Eye camera with 960 fps super slow motion. It's paired w/ Hybrid AF, SteadyShot, and dual tone LED flash.

It highlights modes super auto, manual HDR, and manual camera mode. But, the manual camera mode is very limited compared w/ LG.

Both are excellent shooters, but we find G6 to be the better mobile photography buddy!

Quality-wise, both flagship phones has the ability to shoot excellent images in well lit conditions. But, we find LG's offering to produce more consistent colors and overall quality. The wide-angle mode of G6 just have that GoPro like distortion on the edges. The Xperia XZ Premium could produce punchier colors at times, but we prefer the slightly better white balance from LG G6.
LG G6 in lowlight
LG G6 in lowlight

In lowlight, the LG G6 has a wider and brighter f/1.8 sensor that lets more light in. But, even if Sony only has f/2.0 aperture, it can match or sometimes beat the G6 in lowlight point and shoot performance.
XZ Premium in lowlight

When it comes to manual photography, LG G6 is the superior shooter.
Wide angle + manual mode in lowlight
Wide angle + manual mode in lowlight

For videos, both are amazing for a smartphone. The LG G6 can shoot up to 2160p at 30 fps and 1080p up to 60 fps. LG even has a manual and wide angle mode for videos. It is also slightly more stabilized than the XZ Premium.

But, the Xperia XZ Premium has the ability to shoot 4K videos in pretty good quality for a smartphone! On top of that, it has up to 960 fps super slow motion that works well in daylight.

But, don't ever attempt to use the slow motion feature in indoor or lowlight. Why? Your videos would be too grainy in quality.

Performance

Xperia XZ Premium is the speedier phone
Xperia XZ Premium is the speedier phone

The LG G6 comes w/ a Snapdragon 821 octa core processor paired w/ Adreno 530 graphics and 4 GB of RAM. It has ample 64 GB of UFS 2.0 expandable storage.

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium loads w/ the very powerful Snapdragon 835 w/ Adreno 540 graphics, 4 GB RAM and 64 GB expandable storage.

In real life, the LG G6 is a speedy phone that's great for multitasking and heavy gaming. But, the Xperia XZ Premium is simply the slightly faster and more efficient handset on those aspects.

Thermal management of both phones are okay and slowdowns are minimal.

Both comes in a clean type of Android 7.0 Nougat operating system. Both has minimal bloats as well. We also find them to be pretty intuitive and rich in features. We slightly favor LG's UI design.

Telephony and connectivity is also great for both devices. The max LTE speed of Xperia XZ Premium is slightly faster due to its newer gen Cat 16 LTE vs Cat 12 of G6.

LG G6 advantages - Sturdier construction and better ergonomics, wider 18:9 screen aspect ratio, much better headphone audio output quality, better cameras w/ wide angle mode, stabilized videos
Sony Xperia XZ Premium advantages - Sharper display, speedier processor, slightly better speakers, slightly better battery life, 4K video recording

Verdict

Both phones are great in performance and features, but choosing between them depends on your budget and preferences.

The Xperia XZ Premium at PHP 45,590 is the slightly superior device due to its newer chipset, sharper screen, and sometimes useful up to 960 fps super slow motion.

But, for us the LG G6 at just PHP 29,990 is a very good alternative. It could even be the better phone if you are in need of a tougher device w/ wider screen and better photography cameras.
