Senate approves "lifetime" cellphone number act!
Senate Bill No. 1636

The bill is dubbed "The Lifetime Cellphone Number Act," (Senate Bill No. 1636) was sponsored by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, the current chairman of the Senate Committee on Economic Affairs. It was passed with a total of 20 yes votes with no abstentions and negative votes.

The bill would give consumers them the freedom to choose the provider that would give the best value for their money without having to lose or change their mobile numbers, Gatchalian said.

The "The Lifetime Cellphone Number Act," will make public telecommunications entities (PTEs) in the Philippines provide consumers with mobile number portability (MNP)

Telcos should allow users to transfer from one network provider to another free of charge regardless if you are a prepaid or postpaid subscriber.

In addition, the bill also ordered the PTEs to keep user's profiles confidential under the Data Privacy Act of 2012.

PTEs are given 24 hours to implement the said bill or they could be penalized with up to PHP 1 million fines.
