For the first half of the year, the P20 and P20 Pro flagship phones of the company have a strong demand in the USD 600 to USD 800 price segment. It helped the Chinese global brand build a "high profile" in the market.

They had a record-high market share of 27 percent in 2Q18 in China. The overall global YoY growth of Huawei is 40.9 percent. They shipped a total of 54.2 million units worldwide.

Huawei's success is also due to the release of its GPU Turbo tech which helped the company eared good reputation. They have 618 promotions led to strong sales for Honor models in the online channels.

The combination of market saturation, increased smartphone penetration rates, and climbing ASPs continue to dampen the growth of the overall market, said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

Consumers remain willing to pay more for premium offerings in numerous markets and they now expect their device to outlast and outperform previous generations of that device which cost considerably less a few years ago. To contest this slowdown, vendors will need to focus on new innovative features and form factors combined with incentives and promotions to drive growth in many of these highly competitive markets moving forward.

On the other hand, Apple dropped to the 3rd spot even if they have a second quarter growth. Apple shipped 41.3 million iPhones or 0.7 percent growth versus last 2017.

Most likely, Apple will bounce back after the launch of the new iPhones late this 2018.

Last year, Counterpoint reported that Huawei defeated Apple for the number 2 position. But, Apple rallied and reclaimed the number 2 spot before the end of 2017.

Samsung is still the global leader with 20.9 percent of the market share. However, they had a YoY decline of 10.4 percent decline.

Xiaomi and OPPO are at the number 4 and 5 spot. Xiaomi got a massive 48.8 percent YoY growth.

Most likely, Vivo is at number 6.
