Huawei claimed that it is their most versatile camera system yet. Coming from the P20 Pro, it still has the triple-camera setup, but the monochrome sensor is out.

Huawei and Leica replaced the 20MP f/1.6 monochrome sensor with a 20MP f/2.2 ultra wide-angle lens.

The cool thing is it will be paired with a massive 40MP f/1.8 RGB sensor with 1/1.73-inch size! It also has an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto sensor with OIS for stabilization.

Moreover, it has the brand new Kirin 980 7 nm processor with an advanced Dual-ISP 4.0 tech and Dual-NPU for faster and better image processor.

It also has 4D predictive focus, AIS, 5x zoom, 4K video recording, 960 fps slow motion, and dual-tone LED flash.

Aside from the photography experience, Huawei also added AIS for videos. It can now shoot up to 4K wide and normal videos with stabilization.

For selfies, it has the 24MP f/2.0 w/ AI face beauty and 3D portrait lighting.

Quick thoughts

VERY IMPRESSIVE! I like it better than the P20 Pro out of the box. The level of dynamic range are about the same with P20 Pro, but it has better color accuracy and not that aggressive sharpening.

The ultra wide-angle camera is also better than anything I've seen from other smartphones we tested. It include the LG G7 flagship with ultra wide-angle lens.

I also like that it now has a super macro mode for better close-up shots! You may also use the ultra-wide camera

Lowlight performance is monster-grade for a phone. Yes, even on ultra-wide angle mode.

Selfie camera is a bit better than the ones found on P20 Pro. Skin whitening is not that aggressive this time. Details are about the same though. It is still considered as an upgrade.

Video performance is insanely good! It is the first Huawei device that has AIS for stabilization up to 4K video quality. Stabilization even works on ultra-wide angle mode even on 4K quality.

It also has a lot of effects and filters like time-lapse, 960 super slo-mo, AI color, bokeh video, and more.

So far, this is the most versatile camera system on a smartphone yet for me!
