Build Quality / Design

Flare design at the back

I'm glad to say that even with one of their most affordable offerings out there, Cherry Mobile didn't cut corners with the build and design of the Flare J1. It still solidly built, comes with a semi curved back for better grip and rounded corners without sharp edges for a more comfortable hold. There's just a slight protrusion with the camera at the back that may lead to lens scratches if you don't take a good care of it. By the way, the screen doesn't have any scratch resistance on paper so make sure to add screen protector in it.

The Flare J1 actually reminds me of the Flares in the past with the design except that the plastic used with this feels a bit thicker and more durable. It's also chrome painted on the sides to add a metallic look illusion that could be great or bad for some.

Button and port placement for this 5 inch phone is also on point. You won't have a hard time at all locating the volume rocker, power button and micro USB port and 3.5 mm jack. The single microphone below was also nicely placed which will result to a clearer calls. So far, just like 90% of the phones we tested, the only part with an awkward position is the speakers at the back. Let's really hope that in the near future, most phones will have the front facing speaker setup.

As a whole, the Cherry Mobile Flare J1 is one of those budget devices that looks good and feels tough as the same time. With proper care and use, it should last for a good while.

Specs and features analysis

This is the specs of the very first Android smartphone I had 2 years back which worked quite well for me before. Fast forward 2015, if you use that configuration in a Jellybean handset, you're going to have a bad time.

Fortunately, CM made sure that you'll still have good performance for your starter phone with this J1. it's pre-installed with a more stable Android 5.1 Lollipop with better RAM and battery management.

Yes, the 512 MB RAM still won't get most of the job done, but the quad core processor embedded here will make sure that you get decent speed as long as you won't open a lot of demanding apps. With this setup, he Flare J1 should be good enough to run most of the non demanding task / apps which will be great for calls, SMS, social media and browsing the internet.

The 2,000 mAh battery of this phone should be also enough to make a phone with this setup last for a good while in a single charge. Especially with a toned down screen resolution of FWVGA this device is expected to be battery efficient.

It also has an 8 MP sensor at the back with single LED flash and 2 MP sensor in front for basic video calls / selfies.

As of the moment

Cherry Mobile has a good starter budget Flare here with the J1! It's solidly built, comes with the smoothness of Android 5.1 Lollipop and a rare 5 inch screen at an affordable price. While it's a nice offering against other local brands, I'm not that satisfied yet with its price as they still have the Touch HD with better internals at the same price.

Update: Cherry Mobile Flare J1 will be on sale for just 1,999 Pesos starting this December 21 to 25!
