The rivalry continues

Display - The Redmi Note 9 has a 6.53-inch 2.5D curved FHD+ LTPS screen with 2400 x 1080 resolution and 395 ppi pixel density. It also has Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

FHD+ screen

The realme 6 has a 6.5-inch 2.5D curved LTPS screen with 1600 x 720 HD+ resolution with Gorilla Glass 3 protection, and 269 ppi pixel density.

Redmi Note 9 takes the lead here with an FHD+ screen and Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

HD+ screen

Specs - For performance, Redmi Note 9 sports the 2.0GHz 12nm MediaTek Helio G85 octa-core processor, Mali-G52 2EEMC2 GPU, up to 4GB LPDDR4X, up to 128GB eMMC 5.1 expandable storage, and a 5,020mAh battery with 18W fast charging.

Realme 6i has the 12nm 2.0GHz MediaTek Helio G80 octa-core processor, Mali-G52 2EMMC2 GPU, up to 4GB LPDDR4X RAM, 128GB eMMC 5.1 expandable storage, and 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charge. 

In terms of CPU and GPU speeds, RAM size, and storage size, and even battery capacity, it is almost a tie. Helio G85's GPU (1,000MHz is just 50Hz faster than the GPU of G80 (950MHz).

Those who watch a lot on their phones will enjoy the Note 9S better, but the realme 6i could have better battery life due to its lower-res screen.

48MP quad-cam

Cameras - The Realme 6i has a quad-camera setup with 48MP f/1.8 w/ PDAF + 8MP f/2.2 119-degree ultra-wide-angle + 2MP f/2.4 4cm macro + 2MP f/2.4 mono + LED flash. For selfies, it has a 16MP f/2.0 sensor.

Redmi Note 9 has a quad-camera setup with a combo of 48MP f/1.79 Samsung ISOCELL GM1 w/ PDAF, EIS + 8MP 118-degree ultra-wide-angle + 2MP f/2.4 2cm macro + 2MP f/2.4 depth + dual-tone LED flash. For selfies, it has a 13MP f/2.25 sensor.

48MP quad-cam too

Both devices have quad cameras at the back with 48MP main sensors. For realme, it sports a dedicated mono sensor while Note 9 has a dedicated depth sensor.

For selfies, realme 6i has a bigger 16MP sensor.

Other features - Redmi Note 9 has dual-band WiFi, 4G LTE, fingerprint sensor, USB-C port, Bluetooth 5, P2i splash resistance, IR Blaster, and dual SIM slots.

Our thoughts

For performance, both devices provide similar power. It is virtually a tie. However, realme 6i only sport and HD+ screen compared to Note 9's FHD+ screen.

These devices are two of the best bang-for-the-buck devices to date.
