SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD Review - Portable 1GB/s monster!
SanDisk Extreme Pro

The need for high-speed external storage has been increasing over the years as more people are adopting larger and more demanding file sizes for work and entertainment. Several years ago, SanDisk first introduced the non-'Pro' Extreme Portable SSD with a smaller body and transfer speeds of up to 550MB/s.

Now in 2020, SanDisk has brought the Extreme Pro Portable External SSD to the Philippines that the company claims to reach peak transfer speeds of 1GB/s which makes it ideal for both high bit rate workflows.

Let's dive into the new external storage solution!

Inside the box is the external SSD, documentation, USB Type-A to Type-C cable and USB Type-C to Type-C cable.

It is nice to know that SanDisk provides both a USB Type-A to USB Type-C and a USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable in the box.

The SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD comes in a primarily navy colorway with copper orange accents. In front is a dotted-polycarbonate front plate with the SanDisk branding. On the top right side is a carabiner loop for attaching hooks or cables to secure the SSD to what the user wants it to.

As mentioned above, an orange copper accent lines around the sides of the SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD. At the bottom is a single USB Type-C port.

The product is noticeably solid and lightweight and the curved edges make it easy to hold. SanDisk says that it has a forged aluminum chassis that acts as a heat sink to deliver higher sustained speeds in a portable drive. The Copper accents make it pop and stand out while adding added protection. The integrated hook makes it easy to attach the SanDisk Extreme Pro to secure it.

The SanDisk Extreme Pro is IP55-rated water and dust resistant.

It measures at only 112 x 58 x 11.5mm and weighs only 0.08Kg making this an extremely compact and portable high-speed storage solution.

BlackMagic Design Disk Speed Test
Blackmagic Design Disk Speed Test with Thunderbolt 3 or USB 3.1 Gen2

Blackmagic Design is known for its Cinema-focused hardware and software products and they have a free benchmarking tool that measures the read and write speeds of a drive and it also detects automatically whether the drive will be able to support different high bit rate cinema-grade file formats like ProRes 4:2:2 High Quality, Cinema DNG RAW and 10-bit YUV 4:2:2.

Connected with the USB-Type-C to Type-C cable to the Apple MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port, the SanDisk Extreme Pro was able to achieve 942.2MB/s write speeds and 923.8MB/s read speeds.

Versus its claim of up to 1050MB/s transfer speed, we tested the USB-Type-C to Type-C cable to the Apple MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port and the SanDisk Extreme Pro was able to deliver 942.2MB/s write speeds and 923.8MB/s read speeds. There are still some variations in transfer speeds depending on the host device, usage condition and other factors.

The SanDisk Extreme Pro is also able to handle difficult formats like ProRes 4:2:2 HQ, Cinema DNG RAW and 10-bit YUV 4:2:2. It only had a hard time with high framerate 2K footage that use the 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 format.
CrystalDiskMark speed test
CrystalDiskMark speed test with USB 3.0

We then connected the SanDisk Extreme Pro to our Windows Desktop and our Huawei MateBook 13. The Desktop only had a USB type-A port while the MateBook 13 has USB Type-C. Both the laptop and the desktop only support USB 2.0 speeds with a maximum of 480MB/s. Both the desktop and laptops scored around 450MB/s in both read and write speeds in CrystalDiskMark speed test.

The slower speeds found on the benchmark is a result because of the limitation of the computer side.

So before you make the purchase, you have to find out first if your computer can handle the maximum speeds of the SanDisk Extreme Pro. If your computer has USB 3.0 and above, it should reach the maximum advertised speeds. But if your computer currently has USB 2.0 and below, you have the option of still getting the Extreme Pro SSD and keep it for future-proofing as USB 4.0 will arrive later in 2020 and will offer the same speeds as Thunderbolt 3 in current Apple computers.

This may be the best time to purchase this SSD as USB 4.0 is. coming later this year.

The SanDisk Extreme Pro comes in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB options and starts at PHP 6,899. It is made of high-quality, rugged materials while having an eye-catching design. It is even IP 55 rated. The copper orange trim and accents stand out while navy colorway makes it unique from the rest of portable external SSD.

Performance-wise, when plugged to a USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt 3 capable USB Type-C, the Extreme Pro was able to achieve around 950+ MB/s in read and write speeds but when plugged to USB 2.0 speed USB Type-A and Type-C ports, it reached the maximum speeds of the USB 2.0 protocols. which is around 480MB/s.

Overall, the SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD is built and designed well while being able to perform at advertised speeds of around 1GB/s.

It is perfect for professionals who demand and need the super fast transfer speeds and for those who want a future proof external storage solution.
