Smart triples number of 5G sites nationwide, makes 5G roaming service available in Taiwan

PLDT's wireless arm Smart earlier shared that it increased its 5G network coverage in the country anew.

According to the company, it has rolled out more 5G sites to triple its number of 5G sites in the Philippines. In total, Smart now has 1,400 5G sites nationwide.

These include the new 5G sites in Benguet, Misamis Oriental, and Zamboanga Sibugay. These are in addition to 5G sites deployed in all of Metro Manila's cities and municipalities, as well as in the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Pampanga, Rizal, Cebu, Iloilo, Aklan, and Davao. The company also noted that Smart 5G is now available in Baguio and Cagayan de Oro.

Just as we have invested in providing our customers with the best mobile data experience, we are ramping up our 5G rollout and continuing to expand our LTE—both of which are powered by our fiber network—to provide our subscribers an even better experience, Tamayo said.

To access 5G, Smart also rolled out specially designed Smart Signature 5G plans with 2x more data. The plans also come with the Data Rollover feature allowing the unused data allocation from the previous month to be carried over to the following month.

Smart also highlighted that the Signature Plans now include Unlimited Calls and Texts to All Networks.

Smart also shared that it has activated its 5G roaming service in Taiwan in partnership with FrEasTone Telecommunications to allow Smart Prepaid and Postpaid subscribers roaming iN Taiwan to enjoy 5G with the GigaRoam as low as PHP 999.

This 2021, Smart will also invest between PHP 88 billion to PHP 92 billion in capital expenditures to further improve its network. Currently, PLDT has the most extensive fiber infrastructure with more than 429,000 kilometers as of December 2020 to support Smart's network.
