During a roundtable discussion with members of the media, Globe Chief Information Security Officer Anton Bonifacio said that the group has already invested nearly USD 80 million since 2015 to fight off cybercriminals.

What Globe has done is captive to us, building our capabilities to prevent attacks and threats into our infrastructure, and in turn protect our customers. And even expanding a lot of these capabilities onto the larger Globe group, covering Mynt, GCash, KonsultaMD, Bonifacio said.

The executive said that the pandemic further accelerated the proliferation of text scams as more Filipinos adopt a digital lifestyle.

According to Bonifacio, the penetration has been "pretty massive". In 2021, Globe has already blocked one billion spam messages. It also deactivated 5,600 mobile numbers.

Last month, the government launched an investigation against SMS spamming. The investigation is being led by the National Telecommunications Commission, the National Privacy Commission, and the Department of Trade and Industry.

Earlier, Globe also said it is ready to collaborate with other stakeholders to help protect Filipino customers from smishing and other fraudulent activities.

Smishing, Globe said, occurs through mobile text messaging in which scammers deceive victims into giving their personal data. Scammers then use this data to take over a victim’s financial accounts.

However, the executive stressed it is not unique in the Philippines as other countries experience the same trend.
