Facebook parent company Meta is introducing 3D avatars to Instagram Stories and direct messages and updating the avatars in Facebook and Messenger.

Users can show up as their virtual selves in stickers, feed posts, and others

Since its rebrand last year, Meta has been working towards its goal of creating a metaverse. In line with this mission, the company rolled out an updated version of 3D avatars that can be used in stickers, feed posts, Facebook profile pictures, and more.

The latest update includes deeper visual customizations like Cochlear implants and over-the-ear hearing aids in several colors on all platforms, including VR. Aside from that, this update adds wheelchairs that can appear in stickers on Facebook, in Messenger chats, and in Instagram Stories and DMs.

The Facebook parent company is also enhancing the look of avatars to make them appear more authentic. It adjusted facial shapes and skin shaders and plans to continue to equip more items to the avatar editor. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg elaborated further,

We’re starting to experiment with digital clothing too. You can use your avatar across Quest, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. One day you'll have multiple avatars ranging from expressive to photorealistic. Looking forward to sharing more soon.

Allegedly, users can bring the same avatar across all Meta platforms, including VR. This means any changes users make to their avatar on Facebook and Messenger will automatically appear on Instagram, and vice versa.

However, they still have the option to create different avatars for different platforms. Meta explained that over time, its goal is to make it easier for users to move their avatar from place to place.

Moreover, Meta is also working with the NFL to offer fans a way to support their favorite team ahead of the Super Bowl. Through their avatars, they are able to choose the Cincinnati Bengals or the Los Angeles Rams until February 28, 2020. For those who don't want to side on a team, Meta has a neutral Super Bowl LVI shirt for them.

The said update arrives as Meta is scheduled to release its fourth-quarter and full-year earnings. The company plans to announce the results of its AR and VR hardware unit for the first time.

As of writing, the 3D avatars are being rolled out for users in the United States, Canada, and Mexico only. Reportedly, it will come to more users over the next few months so we have to wait for Meta's official announcement.
