Smart assures continued service

In a statement on Monday, the telco assured its users that Smart services will not be hampered after the company’s office in Makati was shut down for its alleged failure to settle taxes worth PHP 3.2 billion and for operating without a valid business permit for four years.

We assure the public that our services will remain available and accessible to our subscribers, Smart said.

The company also said it has filed appropriate cases to resolve the legal issues. However, these remain pending.

Our legal and tax teams continue to be in touch with the Makati LGU on the matters at hand, Smart noted.

Smart remains committed to complying with Makati City’s local tax ordinances, and with applicable national laws, in respect of local taxation, it added.

On Monday, the Makati City local government issued a photo of the Smart headquarters closed down.

It said the company failed to obtain relief from courts over its franchise tax covering January 2012 to December 2015. Local authorities also said Smart has been operating without a business permit since 2019.
