Socmed platforms get traction as news source?

Based on a report by Reuters Institute, TikTok has recorded the “fastest” growth among social media platforms as a source of news for Filipinos.

The platform's access to news grew by 21 percent this year against the 2 percent from 2020.

Social media titan Facebook, Messenger, and Youtube still topped the list, but Reuters noted that the three posted a dip in engagement with news.

Online and social media remain the most popular sources of news in the Philippines with our more urban sample, while TV and radio news remains important for those who are not online, Reuters’ report said.

Meanwhile, the online platforms of GMA News and ABS-CBN, as well as the Philippine Daily Inquirer secured the first three spots. There were followed by Yahoo! News, Rappler, Philippine Star, and CNN Philippines.
