From Chatbot to Virtual Assistant

OpenAI says that ChatGPT Agent carries out tasks using its own virtual computer, fluidly shifting between reasoning and action to handle complex workflows from start to finish, all based on your instructions.

To put it simply, ChatGPT Agent is a digital helper that can handle complex, multi-step tasks by using its own virtual computer (a safe, isolated space where it does its work). It can browse and interact with websites, run code, analyze data, access APIs and apps, integrate tools, connect apps (such as Gmail, Google Drive, or GitHub using connectors), generate multi-step reports, edit files, use the terminal, and automate tasks.

The agent is designed to be safe. It will ask your permission before doing anything important, such as purchasing or sending an email. This is called explicit user confirmation. It also features a Watch Mode for sensitive tasks, allowing users to actively monitor its actions. It will also refuse high-risk tasks such as bank transfers or giving legal advice.

Like any new product, it is not always reliable and is at risk of hallucinations. There are also some security risks where the agent can be tricked by prompt injection attacks. (malicious instructions hidden on websites to make AI do something bad, such as share private data)

Currently, ChatGPT Agent is only available for Pro, Plus, and Team users of ChatGPT and is not available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland.

Its limitations include basic slide decks, spreadsheet data inconsistency, tool switching lags, incorrect decision making, and limited full automation.

This is a massive step towards Agentic AI, or an AI that can act independently to complete tasks and not just answer questions.

What do you guys think?
