Sports-ready smartwatch lineup
Garmin has introduced three new additions to its entry-level running watch lineup, the Forerunner 70, Forerunner 170, and Forerunner 170 Music, bringing several capabilities previously reserved for higher-priced models down to a more accessible price point.
All three watches feature a 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display alongside five physical buttons, housed in a lightweight plastic frame. New colorways include teal, lilac, citron, and soft pink.
The most notable addition is the inclusion of Training Readiness, Training Status, wrist-based running power, and running dynamics, metrics that had previously been limited to Garmin's premium tiers.
Additionally, the built-in Garmin Coach plans now adapt daily based on recovery data and recent performance. Beginner-oriented programming includes run/walk intervals and lower-mileage schedules. A Quick Workouts feature allows users to input their available time and desired intensity to generate an on-the-spot session.

The watches support more than 80 activity profiles, covering cycling, swimming, and strength training, among others. Health tracking includes heart rate, pace, distance, Body Battery energy monitoring, stress levels, and breathing rate.
A LiveTrack safety feature allows designated contacts to follow a user's location during outdoor activities.
The three models are differentiated primarily by added functionality. The base Forerunner 70 lacks contactless payment support, which is available on the Forerunner 170. The Forerunner 170 Music adds onboard storage for music and podcasts, enabling phone-free listening.
Battery life is rated at up to 13 days in smartwatch mode for the Forerunner 70, and up to 10 days for the two Forerunner 170 variants, according to Garmin's internal testing.
Compared to consumer smartwatches such as the Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch, the display falls short in sharpness and smoothness. Garmin's focus remains on outdoor screen visibility, extended battery life, and button-based navigation suited to active use.
