The metal frame feels solid and the texture added to it and the faux metal polycarbonate back plate add friction that minimizes hand slipping. In front, the display has an unspecified version of Gorilla Glass protection against light scratches. We would still recommend getting a case for the phone though because it doesn't come one out of the box.

Out of the box, the J6 is a good looking phone. It isn't the best looking phone out there but the 2.5D glass at the front immediately catches your attention while your eyes wonder at the subtle details.

Out of the box, the J6 is a good looking phone!

Above the display are the selfie camera, earpiece, LED flash and several sensors while at the bottom of the display is pure chin bezels.

The front glass is held together by a textured metal-like (plastic) frame while the back is mostly a faux metal textured polycarbonate.

It contains the camera, fingerprint reader, LED flash, regulatory information and the DUOS branding. (which indicates it supports dual sim)

On the right is the speaker and power button. At the bottom are the micro USB 2.0 port, 3.5 mm headphone jack and a microphone while the top is empty.

Overall, the device is quite comfortable to hold.

Initial findings

Good looking HD+ display
Good looking HD+ display

1. The J6 2018 is a good looking phone with both premium and lesser premium materials like the metal frame, 2.5D glass and the faux metal polycarbonate backplate.

The display is a 5.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED 1480 x 720 resolution Infinity Display that has gorgeous colors and deep contrast. The 720p resolution is okay but we wished Samsung went above and beyond and went for 1080p given that the multimedia focus. However, it has no light sensor again.

2. It carries the 1.6GHz 64-bit Exynos 7870 octa-core processor and Mali-T830 MP1 with 3GB which is underwhelming if we are comparing specs for similarly priced phones added to the fact that it is being marketed as a multimedia focused phone with gaming inspired marketing commercials.

The 3,000mAh battery also doesn't inspire confidence because of the size and the non adaptive fast charging 1A charger.

3. It runs on Android 8.0 Oreo w/ Samsung Experience 9.0 and it is snappy and one of the prettiest version of the Samsung Experience yet.

Our only gripe is that there are too many settings that Samsung decided to organize in a way that it is hard to navigate and find the settings you want out of the box. The search bar was always what I reached for when I was setting it up.

4. The rear camera is a 13MP f/1.9 w/ AF and LED flash while the selfie camera is a 8MP f/1.9 w/ LED flash. What we liked right away is that it has the same camera app as the S9 and S9+ so it has familar modes but with some missing features like Live Focus. It would have been nice to have but we understand that this is more focused on media consumption.

5. The J6 2018 has face unlock, fingerprint scanner, OTG, 3.5 mm headphone jack and a single speaker on the right side.

As of the moment

Samsung has been marketing the Galaxy J6 (2018) as an affordable multimedia consumption focused phone with Dolby Atmos.

Though the audio and video out of the box is  above average, the processor and battery need to be tested more to truly find out if it is capable to keep up with the demands of the gaming and multimedia consumption crowd.
