Unboxing/Accessories

We received a pre-production model inside the familiar Honor teal colored box. Inside is the Honor 8X, the USB Type-A to micro USB cable and the 5V/2A power plug.

The retail box should have the the documentations and the rest of the items usually inside the box.

Build Quality/Design

Metal and glass build
Metal and glass build

The materials that made the Honor 8X are what you find in flagships. Glass covers the front and the back and in-between is an aluminum frame.

It simply feels premium and durable at the same time. Honor just failed to mention if it has Gorilla Glass to protect the 2.5D curved glass front and back of the device.

It would be better if it'll come with a FREE case inside. And remember, glass is glass. Avoid to drop or bend it.

This is one of if not the most beautiful phone at its price range. Almost no other phone can come close. The way the curved frame seamlessly meld with the 2.5D glass panels is just beautiful.

In front is the large 6.5-inch display with thin bezels on all sides. On top is a notch that is bigger compared to previous Honor phones with notches. It houses the earpiece, cameras, and several sensors.

It has super slim bezels at the side and minimal 4.2 mm chin bezel. On the top, it has a notch. But, the notch is way smaller than the one found on the iPhone X. In total, it goes with a massive 91 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Due to its small bezels, it is just as big as old 6-inch phones from 2017 even if it has a 6.5-inch panel. It measures at 160.4 x 76.6 x 7.8 mm.

At the back is the glass panel with Honor branding. The camera is to the side with the fingerprint sensor on the upper middle part of the phone.

On the left side is the sim card tray while the volume rocker and power button is on the right.

On top is a microphone while the single speaker, micro USB port and the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The textured aluminum frame added that premium feel and added extra friction to help with holding the phone with one hand.

It still amazes us how Honor could price this brilliantly built phone at its price.

Initial findings

Beautiful screen!
Beautiful screen!

1. The Honor 8X is breaking the market again with its large 6.5-inch, 1080p display and its aluminum and glass design. It is both beautiful, premium and sturdy.

The display is bright with decent viewing angles with vibrant color and the bezels are small though the notch is rather large compared to previous Honor phones with notches.

2. It is running on the new Kirin 710 and Mali-G51 MP4 with 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage. This effectively competes with phones with the Helio P60 and Snapdragon 660 but phones with these processors then to be more in the higher price ranges.

The battery has an equally large 3,750mAh of juice.

3. It is running the latest Android 8.1 Oreo with the EMUI 8.2 on top. This means that has access to better Google service integration and the absence of redundant apps. This is good because we have more space in storage and less bloatware.

4. The rear dual lens set up of 20MP f/1.8 with 2MP with LED Flash. It has a hybrid Phase Detect and contrast detect auto focus. It has the Master AI found in flagships with the EMUI.

It also the first mid-range device that we know with AI-assisted handheld long exposure (night) mode ala Huawei P20 Pro.

The selfie camera on the other hand is a 16MP f/2.0 with AI face beauty with modes like Aperture, Night, and Portrait mode.

5. It has LED notification, OTG support, gyroscope, light, orientation and proximity sensors. It supports LTE, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, and GLONASS.

As of the moment

Honor Philippines has continued to disrupt the market with phones that have specs that can rival higher priced phones and they are continuing it with the Honor 8X!

It is one of the few at its price point with a premium aluminum sandwiched by glass designed phone!

It follows a lot of design cues from the Honor phones with higher price points and it is even powered by the Kirin 710 with GPU Turbo tech, 4GB of RAM, up to 128GB of storage, 3,750mAh of battery, and a large 6.5 inch display!

Lastly, the feature-rich AI-assisted cameras out of the box are looking competitive as well.

We will have to do more testing so we will see you in our full review coming soon!

Watch out for it!
