Meet OnePlus 6T

The OnePlus 6T still has the same processor and cameras coming from the OnePlus 6. BUT, they improved on a lot of other things.

It now has a refined design, bigger display with smaller notch, larger battery capacity, new camera tricks, and an enhanced software without the price hike.

Let's have a look!

Unboxing/Accessories

The box
The box

Like the older OnePlus devices in the past, the OnePlus 6T arrived with white box with touches of red paint logo and a number 6 in the middle. It also has the model number, IMEI, and other details found on the sticker at the back.
What's inside
What's inside

Inside, you will first see the 5V/4A OnePlus Fast Charge power brick. It is previously dubbed as the Dash Charge. You will also see the Pete Lau's message to its users, red USB Type-A to USB-C data/charging cable, USB Type-C to 3.5mm cable, SIM ejector too, and a FREE case.

The case included in the package has a transparent back and a translucent shock proof sides. It is not your ordinary free case. It feels a bit more premium than expected.

We also noticed that the 6T has a pre-installed screen protector. Good job OnePlus!

Build Quality/Design

Premium materials

The OnePlus 6T is made out of all premium materials without the sky high price. It is one of the most premium looking smartphone out there with curved metal frame on the side, 3D curved glass at the back, and a 2.5D curved glass on the screen.

In front, it has the Gorilla Glass 6 protection which is twice as tough as the Gorilla Glass 5 last year. Though still not advisable, Corning stated that it can survive up to 15 drops from 1 meter onto rough surfaces before breaking.

One of the few with Gorilla Glass 6 protection!

At the back, we are not sure if it has some sort of glass protection. The midnight black variant that I'm currently testing is not prone to hairline scratches.

If you got the midnight black or thunder purple color options, they have the frosted glass back which goes with better resistance to hairline scratches and even fingerprint smudges.

My only issue is it doesn't have an IP rating for water and dust resistance. Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus stated that the 6T is more water resistant than any of its predecessor though. He claimed that it can survive accidental drop in the sink or a splash during a rainstorm.

Looking into the design, the OnePlus 6T is the refined version of the OnePlus 6.
Back design is identical with slightly protruding rear cameras, but it doesn't have a fingerprint scanner at the back anymore. The fingerprint scanner is now found under the screen of the phone. The
OnePlus 6T is one of the few who have an In-Display fingerprint scanner.

Moving to the screen, the OnePlus 6T is equipped with the biggest display from any OnePlus device yet. It has a 6.4-inch Optic AMOLED display which is bigger than the 6.28-inch screen of the OnePlus 6.

Big screen, tiny notch!

The best thing is its bezels are even smaller this time. It has a waterdrop like notch to provide a much smaller notch than ever with 86 percent of screen-to-body ratio. The phone is only 2 mm bigger than the OnePlus 6 with smaller screen.

The phone got a bit thicker at 8.2 mm versus the 7.75 mm of the OP6 due to its larger 3,700mAh battery compared to the 3,300mAh battery of the OP6.

Overall, the handset looks really sleek. It is the best looking OnePlus smartphone yet.

All ports and buttons are on familiar placements except for the fingerprint scanner. It still has no stereo speaker setup.

Initial findings

Powerful score!
Powerful score!

1. Again, the OnePlus 6T is the best looking OnePlus device yet. The bigger 6.4-inch Optical AMOLED display with smaller notch is stunning. It can go really bright as well.

2. Inside, you will still find the 2.8GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor with Adreno 630 GPU. It also has the same 6GB/8GB LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB UFS 2.1 storage. But, it now has a bigger 3,700mAh battery OnePlus Fast Charge.

It also has the Smart Boost technology which uses the RAM as storage to improve gaming and overall performance of the phone. The company claimed that games like PUBG Mobile has up to 20 percent faster load time and smoother frame rates on games like NBA 2K18.
Neat Oxygen OS

3. The OP6T features the new Oxygen OS based on Android 9 Pie. It is one of the few flagships with Android 9 Pie out of the box. Moreover, OnePlus stated that it has over 500+ targeted optimizations to let you enjoy a smoother overall performance.

4. The camera hardware is the same. You will still see the 16MP f/1.7 Sony IMX519 sensor and the 20MP f/1.7 Sony IMX376 sensor at the back. Those rear cameras goes PDAF focus, 2x zoom, OIS, EIS, and LED flash.

BUT, it now has the now has the Nightscape HDR mode! All you need it 2 seconds of exposure time to let the phone shoot better low light images with improved details. It has detail optimization, multi-frame stabilization, and noise reduction.

OnePlus also updated the HDR and bokeh modes of this handset.

For selfies, it still has the 16MP f/1.7 Sony IMX371 camera. It now has the studio lighting mode ala Apple portrait lighting.

5. There's no LED notification, but it has an always on display. The In-Display fingerprint scanner is cool and surprisingly fast. It is even a bit faster than the speedy In-Display unlocking of the Mate 20 Pro. If it won't work, OnePlus has one of the fastest face unlock ever. The phone also has USB Type-C OTG.

However, the 3.5 mm headphone jack is gone. It still doesn't have a stereo speaker and wireless charging solution.
