Huawei Nova 4: First Camera Samples

OPPO
Infinix
Nova 4 is arguably Huawei's best looking smartphone yet. It is one of the first phones with a pinhole (punch hole) screen in the world.

Aside from its pinhole screen, Nova 4 also highlights a promising triple-camera setup at the back and a 25MP selfie shooter in front.

The triple-cam at the back consists of a  20MP f/1.8 + 16MP f/2.2 ultra wide-angle + 2MP f/2.4 setup. It also has PDAF, CAF, EIS, and LED flash. The 25MP selfie cam used is a Sony IMX576 w/ EIS.

The back cameras and front camera also have the power of AI for scene detection/optimization. The back cam even has an AIS Super Night Mode handheld long exposure feature.
Note: There's a Nova 4 variant with Sony 48MP primary camera, but there's also a model with 20MP primary camera. The unit I used for this camera samples article is the version with 20MP camera.

Have a look at some of our first few shots using the Nova 4 below!

Our thoughts

The 20MP triple-camera variant of the Nova 4 can shoot images with great details and good color punch in well-lit scenarios. There are just times where the AI might oversaturate or oversharpen the shots.

But, you can always turn off the AI if it doesn't work according to your liking. The secondary wide-angle lens is cool. It works very well in daylight scenes. The 3rd lens is for the usual bokeh effect.

For indoor shots, images from the wide lens are softer as expected. In low light loss of detail and dynamic range is noticeable with the wide lens. The main f/1.8 cam can shoot better images in low light.

Plus, you can always use the AI-assisted handheld night mode feature to take stunning images in low light. Sadly, night mode is not available for the secondary wide-lens.

Selfies are important and Huawei knows that. The selfie camera of the Nova 4 is the best from Huawei yet, at least for me. It has better sharpness and colors than the selfie cam of my P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro.

Promising!
