Although the global smartphone market struggled in 2018 Huawei and Xiaomi still posted growth

According to a report by market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Huawei shipped 206 million units in 2018, 33.6 percent up from 2017’s 154.2 million units. Its market share also climbed to 14.7 percent from the previous 10.5 percent.

IDC said Huawei realized a success with its Honor line of devices, almost accounting half of its overall volume.

Xiaomi, on the other hand, saw its shipment volume also grew by 32.2 percent to 122.6 million units versus last 2017’s 92.7 million units.

Its Redmi series devices continue to lead in emerging markets, but its Mi Mix/Max/Pro devices are increasingly becoming flagship contenders with attractive price points, IDC said.

Huawei and Xiaomi secured top 3 and 4, respectively, in IDC’s top 5 smartphone companies. Huawei even bested Apple for quarter 2 and 3 straight last year for the number 2 spot.

Even though Samsung and Apple had secured the top spots, both tech giants’ shipment volumes fell last year.

Korea’s Samsung shipped 292.3 million units, or 8 percent down from 2017’s 317.7 million units. US-based Apple, meanwhile, also shipped 208.8 million units, 3.2 percent lower than 2017’s 215.8 million units.

Another Chinese manufacturer OPPO got a spot, securing the 5th rank. It shipped 113.1 million units, slightly up from 2017’s 111.7 million units.
