This October, realme will launch a new phone that could potentially shake the affordable mid-range smartphone landscape in the Philippines. That phone is the realme 5 Pro.

Meet Realme 5 Pro

Why? Realme 5 Pro is expected to be one of the most affordable phones for both gaming and photography.

It is the realme 3 Pro upgrade that highlights the 10nm Snapdragon 712 octa-core processor, up to 8GB RAM, up to 128GB storage, 4,000mAh battery with 20W VOOC 3.0 flash charge, and the 48MP quad-camera system.

The good news. We were able to grab ahold of the said device to share our experience of it in advance.

Is it really that good? Here's our first impressions! Let's do it!

Unboxing/Accessories

Unboxed!
Unboxed!

Realme 5 Pro arrived with the familiar realme box. It highlights the design of the phone in front along with its key features.

Inside, you will see another box containing its case and paper documentations right off the bat.

Underneath the first box inside, you will find the phone itself.

Upon digging further, you will find the 20W VOOC 3.0 flash charge charger, USB-A to USB-C cables (yes, it is now USB-C), and the SIM ejector tool.

We also noticed that it has a pre-installed screen protector as well.

Sadly, there's no earphones with a mic included in the package.

Build Quality/Design

Sparkling blue
Sparkling blue

Realme 5 Pro reminds us of the realme 3 Pro expect that it looks flashier and the company refined its overall look.

It now uses a glasstic material at the back, an upgrade coming from the glossy polycarbonate back of the realme 3 Pro.

In the middle, the frame has a matte-like paint finish.  In front, it has a Gorilla Glass 3+ protected display.

While it has no mention of water-resistance and its glass-like finish could be prone to hairline scratches, it still feels quite premium overall especially for its expected price.

Flashy crystal back design!

At the back, it has a new crystal design with sparkling blue and crystal green gradient colorways.

The curved glass back looks neat and it is quite easy to hold.

It has a protruding vertically-aligned quad-camera setup at the back highlighting the 48MP snapper.
Full screen!
Full screen!

The front is very similar to the realme 3 Pro, it has 90.6 percent of screen-to-body ratio.

The display size is the same at 6.3-inch. The notch is small and the bezels are considered as slim for a mid-ranger.

There's no LED notification in the notch though.

The place where you will find its earspeaker doesn't act as a secondary speaker as well.

Overall measurements are similar to the realme 3 Pro. It is basically small for a phone with a 6.3-inch big display.

USB-C below!

On top, it has a microphone. Below, you will see the down-firing speaker, USB-C port, another microphone, and a 3.5 mm headphone slot. YES, I like that there is a headphone jack slot.

At left, you'll see the triple slot tray (dual SIM + microSD) together with the volume rocker. At right, you'll find the power key.

Now with USB-C port!

Like other devices with glossy back, the phone is prone to fingerprint smudges.

We recommend putting a case to avoid slipping and protect the protruding cameras from scratches.

In general, it feels good in the hands. It is not that slippery to hold as well.

Initial findings

1. For a phone with an IPS panel, it has a high-quality screen.

The resolution is at full HD as well. It is one of the better screens at its expected price point.

2. Under the hood, Snapdragon 712 may not sound a big upgrade over Snapdragon 710, but it is.

I can feel the difference in speed based on the other Snapdragon 712 devices I tried. It should help you game better.

It even has large up to 8GB RAM and 128GB expandable storage. The 4,045mAh battery has 20W VOOC 3.0 flash charge tech as well.

Based on our experience, it can fully charge the phone at around 1 hour and 30 mins from 0 to 100 percent.

3. The phone runs on ColorOS 6. But it looks a bit different from what we saw with other OPPO devices. It is simply neater.

The camera app is different as well. For us, the ColorOS 6 on realme phones are one of the better Android skins around.

4. It has a total of four cameras at the back and we are excited to try it very soon.

It could be one of the most capable camera phones for the price.

I like the fact that it goes with the 48MP f/1.79 Sony IMX586 flagship sensor paired with 8MP f/2.25 119-degree ultra wide-angle sensor, 2MP f/2.4 4cm macro sensor, and 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor.

The selfie camera looks to be alright. It uses a 16MP f/2.0 Sony IMX471 sensor with AI Portrait mode.

5. The device also goes with WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (2.4GHz/5GHz), 700MHz 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and dual SIM (nano) connectivity options.

It has a responsive fingerprint scanner at the back and its face unlock is one of the fastest around.

As of the moment

I'm quite pleased with what I saw with the realme 5 Pro so far.

I like that it has an improved design with a USB-C slot, the specs are quite capable, and it has one of the most exciting cameras around.

Let us just hope that its price is right. I'm sure, realme Philippines can pull it off.

I am really excited about this phone.
