New processors for Apple Mac computers?

The new processors will base its design on what the company implemented on the iPhone and iPad. Based on rumors, Apple is currently working on three Mac processors known as systems-on-a-chip based on the A14 processor that will be used on the next iPhone.

Apple is said to be eyeing to release at least one Mac with the new processors by 2021. The project, dubbed Kalamata, aims to develop multiple chips signals that Apple will move its Mac lineup forward without Intel's processors.

The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has been working with Apple for the iPhone and iPad processors. They are also going to be tasked with building the new Mac chips as well. The chips will be based on a 5nm architecture which will be the same for the next-gen iPhones.

The first Mac processors are set to have eight high-performance cores, dubbed as the Firestorm, and four energy-efficient cores that are codenamed as Icestorm. Apple is not closing its doors on the possibilities of a 12-core processor as well.

The transition to the new Apple processor designs would likely begin with a new laptop because the company’s first custom Mac chips are not expected to rival the performance Intel chips provides for high-end MacBook Pros, iMacs and the Mac Pro desktop computer.
