MediaTek beats Qualcomm!

The pie

To achieve this feat, MediaTek captured 31 percent of the market share to surpass previous leader Qualcomm with 29 percent of the pie during the said period.

Counterpoint noted that MediaTek's strong performance in the USD 100 to USD 250 price band and growth in key regions like China and India lead to this result.

MediaTek also won accounts with leading OEMs like Samsung, Xiaomi, and HONOR. Notably, Xiaomi's usage of MediaTek chip has increased more than three times since the same period last year. Also, MediaTek was also able to leverage the gap created due to the US ban on Huawei. Huawei also previously purchased a significant amount of chips ahead of the ban.

MediaTek also reshuffled its portfolio by launching the gaming-focused G-series and Dimensity chips which helped bring 5G to affordable handsets.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm was the biggest vendor of 5G chips in Q3 2020.

Apple, Samsung, and Huawei's HiSilicon chip brand all posted 12 percent of the market share. Meanwhile, UNISOC captured 4 percent of the market share.

Will MediaTek retain the lead? Let's see!
