Viu reaches 49 million monthly active users in H1 2021

Viu announced that it now has 49.4 million active users monthly as of June 2021. This is a 37 percent year-on-year growth in this aspect. In terms of paid subscribers, it had a 32 percent YoY growth as well with over 7 million subscribers while its revenue grew a total of 47 percent YoY as well.

Aside from the usual regions that delivered consistent numbers like the Greater Southeast Asia, Middle East, and Africa regions, the key driver markets were Thailand and Indonesia. With a freemium model, Viu continued to see accelerated growth in monetization. This growth is attributed to the strong network of over 80 partnerships in the digital ecosystem across the markets consisting of telcos, device manufacturers, retail and e-commerce businesses, and content distribution partners.

According to the latest Media Partners Asia's AMPD Research report, Viu has been in the number 1 spot in terms of the number of monthly active users for the seventh consecutive quarter in Southeast Asia. Viu also ranked second in both paid subscribers as well as streaming minutes among the leading video streaming platforms in Southeast Asia for the first half of 2021.

Another aspect of Viu's success is the continuous expansion of its library. After launching the Korean Viu Original of "River Where The Moon Rises and Doom At Your Service" in the first half of 2021, Viu also announced the launch of its latest Viu Original, the most anticipated K-Drama of "Now, We Are Breaking Up" featuring stars like Song Hye Kyo (Descendants of The Sun, The Encounter) and Jang Ki Yong (My Roommate is a Gumiho, Search: WWW). The drama is expected to be available on the platform in November.

Apart from the Korean Viu Original series, Viu’s commitment to local originals continued to be strong in H1 2021 with the release of international originals including "Black Season 2" (Malaysia), "uBettina Wethu" (South Africa), and the upcoming "Assalamualaikum Calon Imam Series Season 2" (Indonesia) launching this September.
