Pushing camera phone boundaries?

After several teasers, Xiaomi has officially unveiled the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept Edition.

In a joint effort to explore the boundaries of mobile imaging and professional cameras, Xiaomi and Leica have transformed the flagship Xiaomi 12S Ultra into a professional imaging device by screwing on a Leica M lens.

The companies achieved this by extensively reconfiguring the phone. They greatly reduced the area of the motherboard and padded it. The massive camera module was redesigned and had it replaced with a sub-master screw fixed directly to the entire frame of the phone to allow the phone to withstand the weight.

They also moved the ultra-wide angle lens camera and then they removed the periscope camera and then added a second direct light 1-inch sensor in the center and covered it with sapphire glass.

Xiaomi also reinforced the phone's overall structure to help withstand the external lens's weight and stabilize the phone to reduce shake.

The flange distance connecting the bayonet is 2mm which is designed to allow any user to attach a Leica M series lens with an adapter ring.

Once the lens is connected, the second direct light sensor activates. When paired with an f/1.4 lens, Xiaomi says that the amount of light intake is increased by a factor of one which allegedly greatly improves the phone's shooting capabilities.

Just note that this "detachable" lens is more of an "interchangeable" lens that you can mount on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept phone.

Aside from the hardware, Xiaomi has also developed software that supports focus peaking, zebra lines, histograms, and other standard tools. It can also capture 10-bit RAW photo files.

There is no word yet if the Chinese manufacturer will release the smartphone for the Chinese or International market.
