Smart, Makati sign compromise agreement

In a statement, PLDT’s wireless unit said the decision was made after both parties signed a compromise agreement.

This development follows the parties’ execution of a compromise agreement on March 2, 2023, stating the terms of settlement of their pending local taxation issues, Smart said.

To recall, the Makati government padlocked Smart’s office in the city due to the company’s alleged failure to settle taxes and lack of a business permit.

Local officials said the telco failed to pay taxes amounting to PHP 3.2 billion and that it had been operating even without a business permit since 2019.

The settlement was reached after Smart submitted to the Makati LGU its accounting records corresponding to revenues generated within the territorial jurisdiction of Makati for the relevant periods, Smart noted.

Smart said it remains committed to complying with local tax ordinances and relevant national laws.

It also assured its subscribers of its continuing service.
