Snapdragon 8 Elite launched

Qualcomm has moved away from the supposedly Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 naming and instead renamed it with 8 Elite.

The new chip brings an Oryon CPU with a modified 8-core build. It comprises 2x prime cores with a whopping 4.32GHz peak speed. It is then followed by 6x performance cores with 3.53GHz clock speed.

It supports 24MB L2 cache which is the highest in the industry yet and uses 5,300MHz LPDDR5X RAM.

Among its highlights is the 3nm process made by TSMC allowing the manufacturer to improve the CPU performance by 45 percent and 44 percent in terms of power efficiency vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

For the GPU department, the chipmaker boasts it has a 40 percent more powerful GPU and in energy draw as well while also getting an uplift in Ray Tracing capabilities.

Moreover, the new SoC offers the first support for Unreal Engine 5.3 and the Nanite virtualized geometry system.

When it comes to AI prowess, the SD 8 Elite uses Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU) making the AI task improved at 45 percent performance per watt.

Qualcomm is introducing its AI Engine with multimodal Gen AI capability. Large and small multimodal models can run up to 70 tokens on SLMs.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite also has an upgraded image signal processing (ISP) that is more closely linked to the new Hexagon NPU, giving rise to better HDR, further natural-looking skin tone, sky colors, and autofocus performance. Qualcomm also implemented chip-level photo and video semantic segmentation, as well as video object erasure technology.

For connectivity, it uses the Snapdragon X80 5G modem, the first 5G modem to utilize 6 times more downlink carrier aggregation and AI-based mmWave range extension. This brings 10Gbps and theoretical max upload reaching 3.5Gbps.

The new modem is coupled with the FastConnect 7900 Mobile Connectivity System, marking the first integration of Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and Ultra Wideband connectivity within a single 6nm chip.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is expected to arrive in the next generation of Android flagship smartphones from brands such as ASUS, HONOR, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, realme, Samsung, vivo, and Xiaomi, among others.
