Change your Gmail without losing your existing data

Google has rolled out a new feature that allows users to replace their existing Gmail address without losing their data and services.

Google launches a new feature allowing users to replace their existing Gmail address

This will be a lot more convenient than previously creating a new account, then transferring all data to the new Gmail.

According to a CNBC report, emails sent to the old address will continue to arrive in the inbox, and the original address will still work for signing in to Google services. Existing data, including photos, messages, and emails, would also remain unchanged.

However, note that those who change their address won’t be able to create another new Gmail address for the next 12 months and cannot delete the new chosen address.

To check if you will be able to change your Gmail address via computer:

  • On your computer, go to your Google Account.
  • On the left navigation panel, click Personal info.
  • Click Email.
  • Select the Google Account email. If you can't open this setting, it might not be possible to change your email or username.

If your account's email address ends in @gmail.com, you usually can't change it.

If you're using a Google Account through your work, school, or other group, ask your administrator for help.

To change your Gmail address via computer:

  • Next to your email address, select Edit
  • Enter the new email address for your account. Choose one that isn't already used by another Google Account.
  • Follow the steps on the screen.

An email with a verification link will be sent to your new email address. You'll need to open the email and click the link.

What do you think?
