Smaller but better?

Canon has unveiled the EOS R8 Mark II, a new full-frame mirrorless camera built to be the brand's smallest and lightest model with in-body image stabilization, weighing roughly 546 grams with a battery and card.

It succeeds the original EOS R8, bringing in Coordinated Control IS and several features previously reserved for Canon's higher-end EOS R models, including a joystick-style multi-controller for adjusting the autofocus point—a first for a camera in this class.

At its core is a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor paired with Canon's DIGIC X processor, offering better low-light performance and a wider field of view than APS-C sensors. The 5-axis in-body stabilization system can deliver up to 7.5 stops of correction when paired with compatible RF lenses.

The camera shoots up to 40fps with its electronic shutter and can capture 20 frames before the shutter button is even fully pressed.

Its Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system tracks people, animals, and vehicles, and a new Register People Priority mode lets users preregister specific individuals for the camera to prioritize in crowded scenes like weddings or concerts.

Creative tools include 16 Colour Filters (two of them new), refreshed Handheld Night Scene color options, an upgraded interval timer for time-lapses, and a beginner-friendly Creative Auto mode—another first for an EOS full-frame camera.

On video, the EOS R8 Mark II records 4K at up to 60fps (oversampled from 6K) and Full HD at up to 180fps, with support for Canon Log 3 and custom LUTs. It also supports multi-angle livestreaming, VR lens compatibility, and a new tool that converts still photos into 3D models.

Canon is launching three accessories alongside the camera: the Extension Grip EG-E2, the Tripod Grip HG-1000TBR, and an updated Speedlite EL-5 flash with double the wireless range of its predecessor.
