HUAWEI Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design launched: Up to 10.2-inch 3K privacy screen, U-shaped hinge, HarmonyOS 7

Following the teasers, HUAWEI unveiled the 2nd generation of its tri-fold smartphone.

The new device is called Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design. It is available in Black, White, and Purple, with all three versions sharing a star-diamond camera module, a gold-woven brocade pattern on the body, and an Extraordinary badge near the hinge. 

HUAWEI has redesigned the hinge and screen structure, and the phone is rated IP58 and IP59 for dust and water resistance, making it the first tri-fold phone to reach that level of protection. The device also measures 12.3mm thick when folded and 3.5mm when fully unfolded.

One of its standout features is the Lingdun privacy screen, which HUAWEI describes as the first hardware-level privacy system built directly into a foldable display.

It relies on an independent dual-pixel setup, so a double tap on the outer display, or a press of the smart control key, instantly narrows the viewing angle. 

This keeps the screen visible to the user while making it harder for people to either side to see the content. The outer panels can also be stood upright to physically block side viewing.

The main display

The inner display measures 10.2 inches with 3K resolution and a 12.8:9 aspect ratio, while the outer screen comes in at 6.5 inches with a resolution of 2442 x 1140 and peak brightness of 6,500 nits. 

The outer display uses basalt glass, which HUAWEI says offers 30 times better drop resistance and 16 times better scratch resistance than the previous generation. The inner display uses a multi-layer composite structure that the company claims improves impact resistance by 200%.

Inside the phone is the Kirin 9050 Pro, which the company claims delivers a 42% overall performance boost over the Mate XT, broken down as a 24% gain in single-core performance and a 52% gain in multi-core performance. 

The features

Meanwhile, it is paired with the "Ma Liang GPU," which supports real-time ray tracing across 50 million lines and delivers a claimed 142% improvement in rendering performance.

 

Additionally, the Da Vinci NPU runs an edge-based mixture-of-experts model with 30 billion total parameters, including 2 billion active parameters.

The rear camera system is headlined by a 50MP RYYB main camera with an 18EV ultra-high dynamic range and a variable aperture ranging from F1.49 to F4.0 + 50MP RYYB periscope telephoto camera offering 3.5x optical zoom + 40MP RYYB ultra-wide camera. 

The setup also includes HUAWEI's 3rd-gen Red Maple color camera, which the company says improves color accuracy by 95% over the previous generation.

Other features mentioned are ECG analysis, and it has even received Class II medical device certification from Chinese regulators.

Connectivity features are WiFi 7, 5G, dual 4G, Bluetooth 6.0 LE, GPS, NFC, and dual SIM

The Balong baseband adds satellite paging and messaging support. HUAWEI says it also reduces stutter during video calls on high-speed trains by 25% compared with the previous model.

The Mate XT 2 is the first HUAWEI phone to run HarmonyOS 7. The software includes split-screen layouts built specifically for the tri-fold display, allowing users to run three apps side by side or switch to a PC-style workspace.

It is currently available in China. No word yet on a global release at the moment, but we will let you know once we hear from HUAWEI.
