Huawei's P9 Plus is the bigger brother and upgrade of the regular P9, our daily driver for the past few months. It's still loaded with the same 12 MP Dual Leica Summarit H 1:2.2/27 lenses which made this handset line popular among casual users and mobile photographers alike across the globe.
Huawei P9 Plus Unboxing And First Impressions - Bigger And Better?
Meet the gorgeous Huawei P9 Plus

What's different with the P9 Plus is it using a bigger and better 5.5 inch Full HD AMOLED screen instead of the 5.2 inch Full HD IPS-NEO panel found with the P9. The device also now has a bigger 4 GB RAM64 GB internal storage, and 3,400 mAh of battery.

Another notable improvement found in the specs of the P9 Plus is it is packed with a better 8 MP front facing camera with larger f/1.9 aperture and autofocus tech. That's something not common in front cameras that should make your selfies look better. Lastly, the P9 Plus is equipped with an IR blaster on top that you can use as a remote.

Moving forward, we have the unit with us, so let's begin with this review and check if it is the perfect phone for your needs.

Unboxing / Accessories

Huawei x Leica box
Huawei x Leica box

Just like the its smaller brother, the P9 Plus comes with an all white box that simply looks elegant. There's a simple Huawei P9 Plus print and Leica dual camera branding below that assures authenticity.

Upon opening the package, there's a 2A Huawei Quick Charge wall charger, USB to micro USB Type C cable, earbuds w/ microphone, screen protector, and a nice type of clear case for added protection.

You may just have to be careful with the case included here as it has sharp edges that may lead to scratches. Having said that, we suggest to not to remove the case often to avoid that unwanted scene.

Overall, this is the generous type of package we are expected to get from a high-end smartphone.

Build Quality / Design

Just like the P9, the level of craftsmanship found with the P9 Plus is simply top-notch! Again, the phone is made out of high quality premium materials. This time, our device is made out of a solid slab of aluminum with beautiful chamfered edges, slightly curved back / corners, and brushed style back. In front, the 5.5 inch 2.5D curved glass screen has a layer of Corning's Gorilla Glass 4 for added protection against hard drops and scratches.

Given those traits and what we experienced with the regular P9. This handset is tough which won't bend in your pockets and have unwanted scratches easily.

Again, Huawei created a masterpiece with the P9 Plus.
In terms of design, this handset simply stuns in person. It has a premium aesthetics that's easy on the eyes. It has nice contours / curves, slim, and doesn't look big for a device with a 5.5 inch screen. Speaking of the screen, the 2.5D curved glass and its slim black border bezels makes it appear even better in style.

Ergonomically, it feels great in the hands for a 5.5 inch phone. While it won't be as easy to hold as the regular P9 with 5.2 inch screen, the handset is well machined where there are no sharp edges. However, it might a little slippery in the hands if you're not holding it with 2 hands.

Looking at the ports and button placements, everything is built just the way I want it in a standard way. Personally, I like that the textured power button with red marking on the right that makes it easier to locate.

The ports placement below were properly made too. On top there's a single microphone, and crammed below are the 3.5 mm jack microphone, USB Type C port, and single speakers. On the left side, there's the eject-table hybrid slots for SIM / micro SD card and at the right you'll locate the small textured power button and volume rocker.

As of the moment

This handset is another impressive creation by Huawei in terms of aesthetics, design, and ergonomics. Now we're excited to find out the rest of the improvement it can give due to its better specs and features inside. So far, we think that this is one of the better flagships that's readily available in the country today.
