A week back, Samsung launched the Galaxy A6 (2018) and A6+ (2018) in the Philippines. The higher-end device between the two is the Galaxy A6+ (2018) priced at PHP 22,990.

The new mid-range camera phone to beat?

By the looks of the it, the Galaxy A6+ (2018) is designed for those in need of a Samsung device with premium build and design, large Super AMOLED Infinity Display, and pretty capable cameras.

Now, let's check if this is the "affordable" Samsung device for you!

Meet Samsung Galaxy A6+ (2018)

Dual cameras!

The Samsung Galaxy A6+ (2018) boasts a premium and solid all metal body which reminds us of an improved Galaxy J7 Pro last year. I personally find its blue "matte-like" paint finish very attractive. Unlike other A series phone, it has no water and dust resistance though.

On the front, it has a large 6-inch Super AMOLED Infinity Display with 2220 x 1080 resolution at 408 ppi, 2.5D curved glass, Gorilla Glass protection, and 18.5:9 screen aspect ration.

Beautiful display as expected!

As expected, it has vibrant colors and sharp details. The bezels are much slimmer than traditional 18:9 phones too.

Under the hood, it loads with Qualcomm's 64-bit Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz. It is also paired with Adreno 506 GPU which can handle some heavy games on medium settings.

The Snapdragon 450 SoC is a proven and tested chipset, but it would be slower in comparison versus the likes of Kirin 970 (Honor 10), MediaTek Helio P60 (OPPO F7), Snapdragon 835 (Mi MIX2) Snapdragon 660 (Nokia 7), Snapdragon 636 (ASUS ZenFone 5), and Snapdragon 630 (Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra) processors from its similarly priced competitors.

Samsung coupled it with enough 4GB RAM though. However, the storage at 32GB is smaller than the standard 64GB or even 128GB found on similarly priced smartphones from other brands.

Fortunately, it has an interesting pair of dual back cameras. It goes with a 16MP f/1.7 primary shooter + 5MP f/1.9 depth sensor. It is paired with PDAF focus and a single LED flash.

Since it has a dual camera setup, it has Samsung's "Live Focus" mode for creating shots with deep background bokeh effect. The f/1.7 + f/1.9 lenses of this phone should also help it take better lowlight shots.

24MP f/1.9!

For selfies, this device has an impressive 24MP f/1.9 snapper w/ LED flash. To our eyes, it shoots one of the best selfies at this price point. It even has a three-level front flash adjustment to avoid image degradation and glare when shooting selfies day and night.

Both the back and front cameras has AR stickers to make your photos even more creative.

The rest of the features

This phone also has WiFi, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.2, OTG, FM Radio, GPS, A-GPS, and dual SIM slots. We also like that it goes with a fingerprint sensor at the back, face unlock, Dolby Atmos surround audio, and Bixby assistant.

It boots with the clean type of Android 8.0 Oreo OS w/ Samsung Experience 9.0 skin on the top.

So far, we liked the build, design, and cameras of the Samsung Galaxy A6+ (2018). Its portrait mode (Live Focus) and the three-level front flash is arguably the best at this price point.

However, my concern the Galaxy A6+ is its lower-end type of processor and the smaller storage size (even if it is expandable) versus its competitors.
