Smart, Ericsson eye 5G deployment by first half of 2019

Smart Communications, Inc. has strengthened its plan to bring the fifth generation (5G) technology in the Philippines by 2019 as it signed an agreement with Sweden-based telecom equipment provider Ericsson.

PLDT's wireless subsidiary said it inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU)  with Ericsson to deploy 5G pilot network by the first half of next year! 

Smart said the partnership seeks to launch first the technology in Luzon given the island’s large population. 

PLDT Chief Manuel V. Pangilinan was optimistic of leading this 5G adoption as this would provide opportunities for business growth.

As 5G opens up more opportunities for new services and solutions to offer to our customers, we are investing in future-proofing our network and making sure that our network is ready for 5G, he was quoted as saying in a statement.

Our partnership with Ericsson is part of our commitment to bring to the country the latest technologies to improve the experience of our customers, as well as boost the digital transformation of enterprises and industries, he added. 

Martin Wiktorin, head of Ericsson Singapore, Brunei, Philippines and Pacific Islands, stressed Smart can reshape the market, grow market share given its determination to level up the telecom industry through the 5G.

To prepare for this innovation, Smart has been upgrading its sites, equipping them with 5G-compatible radio equipment across its network. The group said it now has over 2,000 5G-ready sites.

Smart also signed an MoU with Huawei Technologies Philippines to shape the strategic and commercial development of the 5G ecosystem in the Philippines.

PLDT earlier unveiled its 5G Technolob, a facility that will focus on research and development, standardization, and testing of 5G technology.
