It is also equipped with the new Snapdragon 439 octa core processor along with Adreno 505 GPU. It is priced at PHP 13,999.

How well does this smartphone perform? Let's check out, here's our review part 1!

Unboxing/Accessories

What you get inside
What you get inside

Just like the usual Vivo smartphone boxes we've been seeing, the same goes with the Y95.

Inside, you'll find the smartphone itself, USB wall charger, micro USB cable, earphones, SIM ejector tool, and the usual paper documents.

It also has a free clear case to protect the smartphone. We highly recommend putting it on if you don't want to wipe the back of Y95 from time to time since it's prone to fingerprint smudges.

We're also happy that Vivo pre-installed the smartphone with a screen protector!

Build Quality/Design

Vivo Y95 is made out of a polycarbonate material for the back design. On top, it has 2.5D curved glass, but there's no mention of any Gorilla Glass protection.

Beautiful design, respectable build!

We are loaned with the aurora red variant that has a beautiful gradient of purple on the mid part to bottom. However, it is really prone to fingerprint smudges, so as we mentioned earlier, you need to put on the protective case.

Looking at its design, the striking gradient at the rear design will catch your attention. It has slightly protruding cameras at the back with the fingerprint scanner, just the top of the engraved "Vivo" branding.

Just before the very rear bottom, you'll notice two mounted very small circular protruding design, which is new.

It has nothing on top, while on the bottom are the micro USB port for charging, 3.5 mm headphone jack port, and grille speaker.

It's nice to note that it has a triple slot tray (dual SIM/microSD slots) placed on the left side. Meanwhile, the volume rocker and power button are on the right side.

Moving to the screen, it sports a 6.22-inch HD+ 1520 x 720 resolution at 270 ppi display. We hope Vivo made it on a higher resolution since it's becoming the norm for its price point.

It features a halo notch design along with the unnoticeable bezels on the side and almost bezel-less on the bottom, making the screen huge enough.

It is not that big for a smartphone with big 6.22-inch display.

Overall, the handset looks very sleek and premium for the price.

Initial findings

Vivo Y95 AnTuTu score!
Vivo Y95 AnTuTu score!

1. Vivo Y95 has a huge screen of 6.22-inch but with a lower resolution in lined with our expectation, BUT, it's waterdrop notch and bezel-less screen made it get a full view display. The display can go very bright as well.

2. It is equipped with the new 1.9GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 439 octa-core processor along with the ageing Adreno 505. It has 4GB RAM and 64GB expandable via microSD card slot. It is packed with a big battery of 4,030mAh.

The chipset is considered as quite low for the price. Most similarly priced phones runs with at least Snapdragon 636, Helio P60, and Kirin 710. Even the older Snapdragon 450 SoC is better than it on paper.

3. Y95 runs on the Android 8.1 Oreo with Vivo Funtouch OS 4.5. It has minimal bloatwares that cannot be deleted. It looks neat inspiration from Apple's iOS.

4. For the camera part, it features a dual rear camera setup of 13MP f/2.2 + 2MP w/ PDAF and LED flash. It has a selfie camera of 20MP f/2.0 with AI face beauty and screen flash.

The rear camera has the following features: AI scene detection, AR stickers, HDR, Face Beauty, Panorama, Pro, and Docs that can turn your document photos into a PDF file!

Meanwhile for the selfie camera, it has the same features except for the Pro and Panorama. In addition, it has the group selfie feature that lets u tilt the camera to get in the group in one photo.

The shots looks promising so far.

5. Unfortunately, there's no LED notification. The fingerprint scanner and face unlock are both speedy so far. It's also still on the micro USB and has limited sensors to accelerometer, light, orientation, proximity, gyroscope, magnetic, and sound.

As of the moment

The Vivo Y95 looks beautiful, we love the aurora red with purple gradient design. Its halo notch makes the screen huge as well. There are some weak points like the screen resolution and the ageing GPU.

BUT, we still need to test this thoroughly to see how well it performs most especially the new Snapdragon 439 octa core-processor. It isn't just as fast as most similarly priced smartphones based on the AnTuTu score we got.

We will check if this handset is worth the PHP 13,999 price tag.

Update: It is now priced at just PHP 12,999.

In case you missed it, it's already available at Vivo concept stores and kiosks, Shopee, Argomall, and Lazada online stores.
