Xiaomi announces Mi Play with MediaTek Helio P35!

Right on schedule, Xiaomi unleashed the Mi Play today in an event in China. It's the company's newest mid-ranger with a lot of tricks in its sleeve.

First off, the handset comes with a beautiful glossy glass-like finish at the back with Huawei Nova-like gradient design. In front, it is the first device by Xiaomi with a waterdrop/halo-like notch.

It boasts a 5.84-inch 2.5D curved 19:9 screen with FHD+ 2280 x 1080 resolution. Under the hood, it is one of the few with MediaTek's AI-ready Helio P34 12nm octa-core chipset with a max clock speed of 2.3GHz. The chipset is paired with IMG GE8320 GPU.

Just like Huawei, Xiaomi also highlights that it comes with their own software acceleration tricks, the CPU and GPU Turbo.

The Mi Play will come with 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC 5.1 storage, expandable memory up to 256GB via microSD, and 3,000mAh battery capacity.

On the camera part, the Mi Play highlights a 12MP primary shooter with f/2.2 aperture size and 1.25μm pixel size. It also comes with PDAF and EIS. The secondary 2MP camera is designed to capture depth information for bokeh shots.

For selfies, it features an 8MP front camera. Xiaomi also boasts its cameras has AI scene detection.

The rest of the specs include a fingerprint scanner at the back, WiFi 802.11 ac (2.4GHz/5GHz), dual 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, GLONASS, and dual SIM (hybrid) slots.

The Play loads with Android 8.1 Ore OS with MIUI 10 skin out of the box.

Price and availability

The Mi Play is available for pre-order in China today in black, dream blue, and twilight colors. It is priced at just CNY 1,099 (PHP 8.2K). Xiaomi also bundled it with FREE 10GB data per month for 12 months.
