64MP for smartphones? Why not?

48MP is so yesterday, 64MP is the future

The new sensor from the Korean giant is a 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor that uses the same 0.8μm-sized pixels as their current 48MP sensor. This means that the sensor is larger with a wider area to capture more light.

The Bright GW1 produces 16MP images by merging four pixels into one. The company's current 48MP sensor uses the same technique to output 12MP images. It also has the ability to de-scramble the color filter for full resolution 64MP shots in good lighting condition.

As of now, major manufacturers such as Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Samsung fit their phones with 48MP cameras. Samsung is projecting that its new 64MP sensor will go into mass production in the second half of 2019.
