Nokia to launch affordable 5G smartphones in 2020

Juho Sarvikas, chief product officer for HMD, said the company was already working on developing a "value" flagship device as it seeks to compete against 5G smartphones unveiled earlier this 2019.

Industry giants Samsung, Huawei, and even LG led the pack in launching their respective 5G smartphones, with prices ranging from USD 1,000.

But HMD's 5G device, Sarvikas noted would only play from USD 500 to USD 650, or half of the price being offered at the market today.

We see a particular opportunity for us in bringing 5G to a more affordable segment as we enter the market. I would say affordable in relation to what’s available today. I would love to see us at half of the price where you have 5G today, Sarvikas told Digital Trends.

The group is already teaming up with chipset maker Qualcomm and some US carriers to boost its stateside expansion.

Offering more affordable 5G smartphones could help strengthen 5G adoption around the world. Although this is a piece of good news from HMD, the Nokia brand may face a heightened competition as MediaTek and Huawei were in talks to create a low-cost 5G smartphones.
