Android 10 is Android Q's official name

No more sweet names

In a blog post, Android shared that Android Q will be called Android 10.

Android Q will be called #Android10. As a global operating system, it’s important that the release names are clear and relatable for everyone in the world.

Android shared that while the naming tradition based on tasty treats or desserts in alphabetical order become a fun part of the release each year, the names weren't always understood by everyone in the global community.

Android added some examples like:

L and R are not distinguishable when spoken in some languages. So when some people heard us say Android Lollipop out loud, it wasn’t intuitively clear that it referred to the version after KitKat.

It's even harder for new Android users, who are unfamiliar with the naming convention, to understand if their phone is running the latest version. We also know that pies are not a dessert in some places, and that marshmallows, while delicious, are not a popular treat in many parts of the world.

Google's Android shared that there were many tempting "Q" desserts, it is time for them to finally make the change for Android Q.

And it is final, Android Q is now Android 10. But we will admit it, #WeWillMissTheSweetNames.

Aside from the naming convention, Android shared that they have a new logo with robot. The company shared it has a more "modern and accessible look".
