Smart Communications backs government's common tower program

PLDT's wireless arm said it inked a memorandum of understanding with Malaysia-based tower provider edotco Group Sdn. Bhd. and Philippine-based  ISOC Infrastructure Inc.

Under the agreement, edotco-ISOC would establish towers in 71 sites identified by Smart.

PLDT and Smart Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan was bullish on this development as it could help the group's vision of providing better telecommunications services.

Our agreement with the edotco-ISOC Group is a welcome development that will enable us to roll out our LTE, and, soon, our 5G base stations in a quicker and more cost-effective manner. We will thus be able to bring more advanced mobile phone services and faster internet to people in more parts of the country more expeditiously, said Pangilinan.

Smart Communications noted it continues its talks with other common tower providers and would sign new agreements once its requirements and completion timetable are met.

Smart is the midst of a nationwide deployment of its LTE and LTE-Advanced network that has won speed test awards from leading international internet testing and analysis firms like Ookla, OpenSignal, and Tutela.  This is part of the PLDT Group’s massive PHP 78.4 billion capital expenditures program for its fixed and mobile networks.
