Apple has just been granted a patent for an In-Display Optical Touch ID fingerprint scanner.
In-Display Optical Touch ID fingerprint scanner
The tech will allow future Apple phones will full-screen display have a physical fingerprint scanner under the display like most Android phone makers already do.
To recall, the Vivo X20 UD is the very first handset in the world with an In-Display fingerprint scanner.
An optical image sensor is carried by the housing under the display. The optical image sensor senses biometric image data associated with a user, such as, for example, data representative of a biometric image of the fingerprint patterns of the user’s finger. The controller may perform an authentication function by matching the acquired biometric image data to the stored biometric template data stored in the memory.
But what will happen to Face ID? Our guess is Apple will likely retain it and it will co-exist along with the In-Display Optical Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

However, if Apple will decide to eliminate the touch and all the sensors needed for the Face ID won't fit the phone anymore, we won't be surprised if it will be removed and be completely replaced by the In-Display Optical Touch ID.
When will we see this? Only time will tell. In-Display Optical Touch ID for the future iPhone 12 anyone?
