Smart 5G is live and real

Using the newly-launched Huawei nova 7 5G, we went to SM Megamall in Mandaluyong to experience the "super-fast data service" of PLDT's wireless unit.

True to its promise, we recorded download speeds of as fast as 751 megabits per second (Mbps), while the upload speed reached 59.6 Mbps.

Based on our past speed tests, the 4G network—if you are in a good area coupled with your phone's carrier aggregation—could deliver download speeds ranging from 80 to 120 Mbps, and upload speeds of 20 Mbps to 30 Mbps.

Note: PH's recent average mobile data speeds are 16.17 Mbps for download and 5.91 Mbps for upload nationwide according to the latest Ookla

In order to witness the 5G network, Smart said they must use Smart-certified handsets with 5G-activated SIMs.

Currently, the 5G network is now operational in busy areas of Makati Central Business District (CBD), Bonifacio Global City CBD, Araneta City, SM Megamall, and Mall of Asia Bay Area.

The launch of Smart’s 5G service enables the Philippines to level up and join the ranks of countries utilizing the next generation of mobile technology. For our customers, it opens the door to an even higher level of customer experience in terms of enjoying video, playing eSports, and using more powerful digital services, said Alfredo S. Panlilio, PLDT Chief Revenue Officer, and Smart President and CEO.

Smart noted the 5G is also being rolled out in key high-traffic areas such North Avenue in Quezon City and Taft Avenue in Manila, as well as in Ortigas CBD, and Clark Green City in Pampanga.
