Korea-based Asia Economy Daily reports that Samsung and Tesla are working together to manufacture and use 5nm chips for autonomous driving. Because of the COVID-19 Pandemic and US restrictions to Huawei, electronics including chipsets have been experiencing a global shortage. Aside from the pandemic, the increase in expansion and adoption of electric vehicles has increased the demand for the chipsets for autonomous driving. Samsung sees these as opportunities to grow in the chipset market.

The report says that the 5nm chipset is currently in the research and development stage at the Samsung Foundry division and will be soon mounted on Tesla's autonomous vehicles.

This partnership is not new as Samsung and Tesla have worked on self-driving chips with the 14nm chips.

The difference between autopilot and autonomous driving is that Autopilot systems require the driver to continue thinking about the road while driving while autonomous systems are designed to do the thinking for the driver.

Samsung has also recently reorganized its organizational structure while relocating manpower to the Advanced Driving Assistance System that is focused on autonomous driving technology. If new developments work out, Samsung could grow to be a bigger threat to TSMC.
