Samsung Galaxy S21 faces Huawei's best
 |
Glasstic vs real glass back |
Build/Design - The Samsung Galaxy S21 sports a metal frame, a glass front, and a frosted glasstic back. It also has the new accented camera bump at the back with a quad-sensor setup. It has Gorilla Glass Victus protection as well as IP68 water and dust resistance. It is just weird seeing glasstic (plastic) on a PHP 50K phone.
Meanwhile, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro also has a metal frame with a glass back with a glossy finish. It also has a unique looking circular camera hump housing the quad-camera setup. There's no mention of Gorilla Glass protection here but it is also IP68 water and dust resistance.
 |
S21 (right) has a smaller screen compared to S21+ (left) |
Display - The Samsung Galaxy S21 features a relatively smaller 6.2-inch Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protected Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with 120Hz refresh rate, FHD+ 2400 x 1080 pixels at 421 ppi.
 |
Horizon curved screen |
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro has a 6.76-inch Horizon OLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, 2772 x 1334 resolution at 455 ppi. There's no Gorilla Glass protection here but it has its own proprietary screen protector installed.
The Huawei Mate 40 comes out ahead in terms of resolution and size but the Samsung Galaxy S21 has a better screen panel with a faster refresh rate.
Specs - For performance, the Samsung Galaxy S21 sports the 5nm 2.9GHz EUV Exynos 2100 5G octa-core processor, Mali-G78 MP14 GPU, 8GB LPDDR5 RAM, up to 256GB UFS 3.1 storage, and a 4,000mAh w/ 25W fast charging, wireless charging, reverse wireless charging.
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro sports the 5nm+ 3.1GHz EUV Kirin 9000 5G octa-core processor w/ Triple NPU (Dual BigCore + Tiny Core), Mali-G78 MP24 GPU, 8GB LPDDR5, 256GB UFS 3.1 expandable storage, and 4,400mAh w/ 66W SuperCharge + 50W Wireless SuperCharge + Reverse Wireless Charging.
Just like with Galaxy S21 Ultra, Mate 40 Pro's Kirin 9000 outperforms the Exynos 2100 of the Galaxy S21. Huawei's GPU even has 10 more cores than Samsung's GPU that is great especially for gaming.
But in real life, the difference in speed is hardly noticeable. Both are top-notch and super-fast phones.
For the RAM and storage, it is virtually a tie as the two devices feature the same amount and technology for both.
Huawei Mate 40 Pro also has a bigger battery with faster-charging technology for both wired and wireless.

Samsung triple-cam |
Cameras - The Samsung Galaxy S21 has a triple-camera setup at the back with a 64MP telephoto w/ OIS + 12MP f/1.8 wide main sensor w/ OIS + 12MP ultra-wide+ LED flash. It also has a 10MP wide sensor with Dual Pixel AF for selfies.
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro has a quad-camera setup as well with 50MP f/1.9 RYYB Ultra Vision Wide w/ Full Pixel Octa PD Autofocus, OIS + 20MP f/1.8 FREE-FORM Ultra Wide Cine + 12MP f/3.4 5x Optical Zoom w/ OIS + Laser Sensor + dual-tone LED flash. For selfies, it has a dual-camera setup with 13MP f/2.4 Ultra Vision Selfie w/ AF + 3D Depth Sensing.
In the megapixel battle, looks ahead at first glance as Samsung Galaxy S21 comes with a bigger 64MP sensor. But, note that this is just a 3x telephoto camera. Its more useful main and ultra-wide-cameras only comes with 12MP cameras.
 |
Leica quad-cam |
Huawei Mate 40 Pro's 50MP main camera is bigger being a 1/1.28-inch sensor. It also has more sensors as well. AND, its 12MP zoom camera is a 5x periscope style telephoto shooter. This is superior to S21's 3x optical zoom.
S21 also has a larger 10MP selfie camera with Dual Pixel AF. But, Mate 40 Pro's selfie camera is the highest-rated at the moment. It is also wider.
Other features - The Samsung Galaxy S21 has WiFi 6, 5G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.1, UWB, MST, OTG, dual-band GPS, NFC, Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, face unlock, IP68 water and dust resistance, USB-C, UHQ 32-bit/DSD Audio support, and AKG stereo speakers.
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro features WiFi 6+, 5G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.2 with BLE, SBC, AAC, LDAC, OTG, NFC, dual-band GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS, In-Display fingerprint sensor, gesture sensor, IR Blaster, IP68 water and dust resistance, USB-C, HiFi DAC, stereo speakers, and a Virtual Volume Tuner.
Samsung Galaxy S21 - Better display, more affordable
Huawei Mate 40 Pro - Faster CPU and GPU, bigger battery, faster-charging tech, better connectivity, more features, quad-cameras, 13MP selfie sensor, expandable storage
Our thoughts
The Samsung Galaxy S21 may appeal to those looking for a smaller device with decently powerful specs, a good camera system, and a lower price tag.
But for a bit more, the Mate 40 Pro provides a real glass back instead of plastic, arguably faster CPU, larger battery capacity, faster-charging tech, a larger main camera sensor with a quad-camera setup, and a better selfie sensor.
What do you guys think? Who are you picking?
