DICT to deploy more FREE WiFi sites in Visayas, Mindanao

The government is eyeing to deploy more free WiFi sites in isolated and disadvantaged areas in Visayas and Mindanao this year.

The Visayas, Mindanao to have more FREE WiFi sites

In a statement, the Department of Information and Communications Technology said over 200 areas in Visayas and Mindanao will be equipped with free internet access.

For the Visayas, about 267 targeted barangays will soon benefit from the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act.

The DICT did not provide details on its Mindanao rollout but noted that as of March 20, it already provided hotspots to a total of 164 locations.

Bukidnon - 99 hotspots in 30 locations 

Camiguin - 20 hotspots in 8 locations

Lanao del Norte - 58 hotspots in 38 locations

Misamis Occidental - 58 hotspots in 21 locations

Misamis Oriental - 135 hotspots in 52 locations

Iligan City - 8 hotspots in 2 locations

Cagayan de Oro City - 32 hotspots in 13 locations

Following President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s directive to connect the government to other governments, businesses, and citizens, we have ramped up our efforts to install more FREE WiFi sites across the country. Considering our current situation, we will further double and even triple our efforts to provide connectivity to all Filipinos to help them adopt and thrive in the new normal through various opportunities found online, DICT Secretary Gregorio B. Honasan II was quoted as saying in the statement.

As of March 10, the DICT already deployed 8,170 free WiFi sites across the Philippines.
