LPU Manila launches the country's first eSports college degree

Amid the booming eSports industry, Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Manila Campus is now ready to offer the country's first eSports college degree.

PH's first eSports college degree

Slated to launch for the upcoming academic year, LPU is introducing the four-year BS Esports program with Southeast Asian gaming firm Tier One.

In a recent forum, Tier One founder Tryke Gutierrez said they approached LPU in 2020, proposing that there should be a "specialized" education for people in the eSports arena as the sector continues to gain popularity.

Gutierrez founded Tier One with Alodia Gosengfiao.

As much as we were able to build this company, 'yung backgrounds namin were different in the places we’re in. I did not study esports pero my background was more about organizational communication. And that definitely helped me build this company but I still believe that specializing and learning more about the spaces in the academe is really very important before going into the workforce, Gutierrez said.

LPU is set to offer two tracks: Esports Management, and Game Design and Development. According to the website of LPU, Esports Management is targeted to enhance the management and organization, planning and team management, and business skills of the students. The program also enables the students to develop business plans and organize events utilizing online streaming, marketing, and advertising events through digital technology.

The program

Game Design and Development, meanwhile, covers the concepts, principles, and techniques in design and development grounded on the fundamental knowledge of Esports. This aims to develop knowledge and understanding of Esports blended with the concept of game design theories and game programming. The program enables the students to enhance creativity and inventiveness in game design and game development.
