More telco players soon?

Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Emmanuel Rey Caintic said several groups have already approached the agency to inquire about the process.

He noted that some of them are based in Europe and the US.

For their part, Caintic said the DICT would ramp up the process of applications of these companies seeking to offer telco services in the local market.

During the interview, Caintic also said Elon Musk's SpaceX is already processing its papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He added the company still needs to secure permits from the National Telecommunications Commission and the DICT.

Sa atin naman, inaantay natin makumpleto mga papeles para maka-umpisa sila maka-operate. Pagkatapos nun magtatayo pa sila earth stations, may mga ilang buwan pa silang kailanganin, said Caintic.

Late in March, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) revealed that SpaceX would establish a local Filipino entity that will be their wholly-owned subsidiary.

DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez said SpaceX targets to provide internet services in the Philippines using its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network constellation called Starlink.

Three gateways are being eyed for deployment for SpaceX's initial phase of its launch.
