According to a report by GMA News Online, the National Telecommunications Commission issued a memorandum on July 27 directing telcos “to deploy Libreng Tawag and Libreng Charging Stations in strategic areas affected by the earthquake in Abra.”

They were also reminded to follow health protocols to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

The memorandum is in effect until August 5, 2022.

NTC also asked the companies to submit their report of compliance on or before August 10.

In separate advisories, PLDT-Smart and Globe Telecom said they have deployed the said services, specifically in areas greatly hit by the quake.

PLDT-Smart said personnel and mission-critical equipment have been deployed to set up free call stations in Abra, specifically at the Abra PD Office, Horizon St. Zone 7, Bangued, as well as in Ilocos Sur at Vigan Northern Alliance Trading, 3rd Floor UNP Town Center, Tamag, Vigan City; and Candon City PD Office, Corner Gaerlan, and Abaya St., San Isidro, Candon.

Meanwhile, Globe Telecom said Libreng Tawag, Libreng Charging, and Libreng WiFi stations have been set up in affected areas, including the Bangued Plaza. Service will be available for at least three days, it added.

Customer care services are also available for Globe customers, the company noted.
