Qualcomm intros 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, promises a 35 percent performance boost!

At the Snapdragon Summit 2022 in Hawaii, an American mobile chipmaker introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Is this the new best chip for mobile phones?

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the follow-up to the 8 Gen 1 and 8+ Gen 1 high-end chip and it is expected to be launched in commercial devices by end of 2022. This is the chip that will power most high-end smartphones next year.

Qualcomm said that the new chip is designed to revolutionize flagship smartphones. It has Snapdragon Smart that enables improved AI experiences like faster natural language processing, INT4 support, and more, Snapdragon Sight technology with a new Cognitive ISP for real-time semantic segmentation for photos and videos, Snapdragon Elite Gaming with an improved hardware-accelerated ray tracing, first 5G AI processor, the only commercial WiFi 7 SoC with High Band Simultaneous Multi-Link, and a more advanced Snapdragon Sound with spatial audio, and many more.

The chip is based on TSMC's 4nm manufacturing process with an octa-core processor featuring a 1x Cortex-X3 Kryo Prime core clocked at 3.19GHz, 2x Cortex A715 Performance cores at 2.8GHz, 2x Cortex A710 Performance cores at 2.8GHz, and 3x Kryo Efficiency cores at 2.0GHz. This setup promises a 35 percent faster performance and 40 percent better power efficiency.

It is using a "New Adreno" GPU with Vulkan 1.3, Snapdragon Snadow Denoiser, Adreno Frame Motion Engine, 25 percent faster graphics rendering, and 25 percent better power efficiency.

It also has up to 4K 60fps or QHD at 144Hz display support, 10-bit colors, HDR10+, HDR vivid, and Dolby Vision.

For AI, it has a new HexaGon DSP, AI Engine, and Qualcomm Sensing Hub with Dual AI processors that boasts up to 435 percent faster AI performance.

In the camera department, it is using a Triple 18-bit Spectra ISP with up to 200MP photo capture, 108MP single camera, 64MP + 36MP dual-cam, up to 36MP triple-cam, 8K HDR at 30 fps, and 720p at 960fps slow-motion.

It connects using the Snapdragon X70 5G Modem with up to 10 Gbps Downlink and 3.5 Gbps Uplink. This also supports 8 carries mmWave with 2x2 MIMO and sub-6GHz with 4x4 MIMO.

As mentioned, it has up to WiFi 7. It also has Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX Lossless support, Dual Frequency GNSS, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 support.
The brands who will use Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

According to Qualcomm, the chip will be available in HONOR, Xiaomi, vivo, Sony, OPPO, ASUS, OnePlus, Sharp, and many other brands soon. There is no mention of who will be the first to have it. There is no mention of Samsung as well.
