OPPO A98 Camera Samples from Baguio, City of Pines

We took the OPPO A98 with us to Baguio City to see how its cameras performed when taking travel photos.

Launched in October 2023 in the Philippines, the OPPO A98 arrived with the 6nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 octa-core processor, Adreno 619 GPU, 8GB LPDDR4X, 256GB UFS 2.2, and a 5,000mAh battery with 67W SUPERVOOC fast charging. It is priced at PHP 18,999 in the Philippines.

At the back of the A98 are the 64MP f/1.7 main camera, a 2MP f/3.3 microlens with 40x microscope zoom, a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor with an LED flash. While in front are the 32MP f/2.4 selfie camera.

The stock camera app comes with the following modes: Photo, Video, Night, Portrait, Microscope, Pro, Extra HD, Pano, Slo-Mo, Time-lapse, Dual-View Video, Sticker, and Text Scanner.

The Pro mode comes with controls for ISO (100-6400), Shutter Speed (1/8000-30 secs), EV (+-2), Focus, and White Balance.

The first two (2) images listed above were taken in daylight. As you can see the sharpness, detail, and contrast are on point. What caught our eye was the darker exposure when switching to the 2x crop mode.

The same could be said with the shots inside The Barn restaurant. There is decent sharpness and detail but what stood out are the colors and contrast.

For the daylight selfies, the images are sharp and detailed with the colors being vibrant but the skin tones are not quite right. It tended to make Neil's skin browner than it should.

When shooting close-up the images are sharper and more detailed than when shooting normally. The colors are vibrant while the contrast is deep.

In low light, the images are surprising as there is minimal build-up of noise. It is enough to reduce the sharpness and detail but the color also retains majority of its color accuracy but it doesn't pop as much.

Quick thoughts

OPPO A98 rear cameras

Overall, we were somewhat satisfied with the results of the rear and front cameras of the OPPO A98.

It takes decently sharp images with good color, contrast, and detail. In low light, it managed to control build-up of noise or grain while retaining sharpness, detail and color.

Our only concerns are the skin tones when taking selfies and the noticeably less sharp images when comparing the main rear camera and the rear ultra-wide camera.

Otherwise, we would be happy to have the OPPO A98 as our daily driver for a local travel especially when we have a tight budget of under PHP 20K for smartphones that also looks good with fast charging.
