Travel time in Metro Manila world's slowest in 2023—study

A recent study revealed that travel time in Metro Manila further worsened—and even worse—across 387 other cities it covered.

More than 20 minutes needed to drive 10 km

According to the 2023 Traffic Index, a study by transportation data company TomTom Traffic, Metro Manila ranked first among cities with the longest travel time when it comes to the metro area. The city ranked second in 2022.

Travel time increased in Manila last year. The data suggests that average time it took to travel 10 km increased by 50 s, TomTom said.

The study said it took 25 minutes and 30 seconds in order to travel 10 kilometers in the capital last year. The worst day to travel in 2023 in Metro Manila was on December 15 when the average travel time reached 31 minutes and 50 seconds to drive 10 kilometers.

It noted an average of 117 hours or 4 days and 21 hours were the extra time spent on driving during rush hours in the past year. This was up by 12 hours and 51 minutes compared to 2022.

When it comes to the city center, the city took the 9th spot with an average travel time of 27 minutes and 20 seconds in order to drive 10 kilometers.

Travel time increased in Manila last year. The data suggests that average time it took to travel 10 km increased by 20 s, the study said.

The worst day to travel last year was on October 27 when the average travel time to drive 10 kilometers was 33 minutes and 10 seconds.

Extra time spent when driving in the city center during rush hours reached 105 hours or 4 days and 9 hours. This was 5 hours and 47 minutes more than in 2022.

In 2023, the busiest street in Metro Manila was Quezon Avenue, the study said.
